~ The dumb reason for how he got his name |
Buzz Lightyear, later known as Zurg, is the main antagonist of Pixar's 26th full-length animated feature film Lightyear, a Toy Story spin-off prequel film centered on the origin story of Buzz Lightyear.
He was voiced by James Brolin.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- His overall concept as an elderly Buzz Lightyear from the future wanting to fix his mistake doesn't really line up with what we think we know about him in the Toy Story films, where it is led to believe that he is Buzz's father. Not only that, but his whole concept feels pretty lazy and forced, as nothing in the movie explored alternate versions of characters prior.
- The twist is often times cited as being a rip-off of various future counterpart twists, like in The LEGO Movie 2, where its Big Bad, Rex Dangervest, is also a future version of the main protagonist trying to fix his mistakes.
- Ignoring the twist, this version of Zurg is often criticized for how edgily dark the film makes him, which contrasts the card-carrying villain portrayal of him in the mainline entries of the Toy Story franchise.
- His plan is criticized for making zero sense. He wants to contact Buzz so he can get the Hyperspace fuel, but he sends his mute robot soldiers to get him instead of doing it himself. He also tries to shoot down Buzz's ship, which would have destroyed both Buzz and the fuel.
- The reason he got his name is seen as dumb, as due to the robots not being able to say buzz and instead says zurg, he decided to adopt the name Zurg.
- His portrayal was one of the main reasons why the film was left with a mixed reception. Even then, those who didn't absolutely hate the film admitted him to be one of the weakest parts of it.
- He’s supposed to be Buzz’s father like in Toy Story 2, but instead he’s Buzz Lightyear himself. Angus MacLane who directed Lightyear, said that Zurg was originally supposed to be Buzz Lightyear’s father but it was changed due to him and the rest of Pixar fearing that audiences would find the plot twist too predictable.
