NOTE: This article focuses on Wile E. Coyote's portrayal in the Rudy Larriva shorts produced by Format Films between 1965 and 1966. |
Wile E. Coyote is a major antagonist in the Looney Tunes franchise.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- He lacks the sympathetic and humanizing traits of his Chuck Jones counterpart, becoming less expressive in places, which makes it difficult for the audience to have any attachment for him.
- His design in the Larriva shorts is off model, which may explain his limited expressions.
- His waddling whenever he starts chasing the Road Runner is uncanny.
- He is shown to be a quitter at the start of a few shorts. Whereas his Chuck Jones incarnation only stopped chasing the Road Runner from shock at being outrun, the Rudy Larriva incarnation easily grows tired from chasing his prey, stopping after a few seconds to catch his breath.
- He is also shown to be rather cowardly. In "Out and Out Rout", he orders a hunting falcon to chase after the Road Runner. The falcon glares back at the coyote, who smiles meekly, and fails to assert his authority over the bird.
- His howls in shorts like "Highway Runnery" and "The Solid Tin Coyote" are creepy and disturbing, when compared to his cries of pain in the Chuck Jones shorts.
- He is quite insensitive, as shown in "The Solid Tin Coyote" where he insults his own creation, which is what leads to him losing his prey.
- He screeches like a cat as shown in "Boulder Wham", while trying out his karate skills on his prey, which is the last kind of sound that anybody would expect to hear from a coyote.
