NOTE: This page will only focus on the titular Wendy Darling from the 2023 Peter Pan & Wendy, as the original and other adaptions aren't considered scrappies, thus only information on the 2023 Wendy version goes here.

Captain Hook: You have the boy's magic.
Wendy: No, this magic belongs to no boy!
~ Wendy's most infamous quote.
Peter Pan: I fought Captain Hook in a duel and I cut off his ha...
Wendy: Yes, Yes, Yes, Yes, Everyone knows that.
~ Wendy interrupts Peter Pan, showing how unfriendly she is.

Wendy Darling is one of the two titular main protagonists (alongside Peter Pan) of the 2023 live-action film Peter Pan & Wendy. To avoid being sent to a boarding school by her parents, she and her little brothers follow Peter Pan and Tinker Bell to Neverland, where she will never have to grow up.

What Makes Her a Scrappy?[]

  • In the book, the original 1953 Disney movie, and the 2003 live-action movie by Universal Studios, she's a warm, loving, and mature character, who is insecure about becoming an adult. Here, though she lacks those insecurities, she's rude, condescending, selfish, and violent — quite the opposite of her original character. Fans have a hard time seeing this character as another version of Wendy, due to lacking many of the qualities of her canon self to the point of feeling like a completely different person.
  • Fitting with Disney's other recent live-action movies, she's considered exactly the same type of bossy toxic girl boss, and this time the girl isn't even a good role model, as she's constantly unlikable.
  • She never faced any consequences for her jerkish behavior (thus making her a Karma Houdini).
  • This kind of character writing is supposed to be an answer to sexist portraits of female characters in Disney’s early days, where they were two damsels in distress to be saved by heroic males in the eyes of some fans. But instead of just giving females more active, heroic roles, Wendy's behavior in this movie is of a brute, constantly angry, egotistic spotlight-stealer boy. So, it's basically a role switch.
    • That leads to many female fans to say that they feel discriminated by this type of "heroines" in modern Hollywood productions because it's exactly as sexist as before. The main message they get means the only way a female will be respected is when "they behave like men".
    • Ironically, the 2003 version of the character was praised for still retaining her essential feminine qualities while also being more irregular than previous versions.
  • When her brothers fight with their swords in the beginning just like in the original movie, instead of trying to calm them down, she just fights with them and beats them with ease. She is supposed to look cool and strong, but she is way older and larger than her little brothers, so the viewers just saw it as pathetic.
    • When she broke the mirror, she tried to give the fault to her brothers in front of their father. She is really unlikable from the start.
    • While she also did play-fight with John in the beginning of the 2003 film, she was clearly enjoying being part of the play-story and never framed her brothers for breaking a mirror.
  • She mistreats Peter Pan from the beginning and distrusts him, despite him being the one who gave her the chance of her life in the Neverland in the first place.
    • That doesn’t change in the slightest when the movie goes further. In an infamous scene, she even slaps Peter (after he helped save the group) and constantly belittles him.
  • In one scene, she calls out Hook for his evil behavior, which would have been an awesome moment if she wasn't a safe distance away, and later scenes, she is scared when she is close to him which makes her seem like a coward.
  • She doesn’t even read for the lost children, and despite it being one of her hobbies, she doesn't want to be seen as a mother.
  • When she jumped from the plank and made herself "good thoughts", the last thought of her was to die alone as an old lady.
  • The infamous line "This magic belongs to no BOY!" was also extremely frustrating.
  • She fights with Tiger Lily and beats the whole pirate crew easily, despite her never having any fighting experience before coming to the Neverland, which makes her a Mary-Sue.
  • She is hated because it's basically her fault that this movie plot was such a disaster. To give her more screentime, showing her perfect strength and power and her independence and to show that anyone loved and needed her, many other characters like her brothers, Tinker Bell and Peter Pan got badly flanderized and the main message of the original film was never able to show.
    • To make things worse, she is also flanderized at physical strength. Besides that and rudeness, she basically had no character.
  • All in all, Disney completely botched her character.

Trivia[]

  • Many people think that Disney was at their absolute worst with Peter Pan & Wendy, and out of the many films that this story got, this version is by far the most unpopular.
