Vick Ran is a minor but relevant character from the 2006 film Lady in the Water. He's a writer living with his sister who's destined for a major fate in the future and the real reason Story is visiting.

He's played by the movie's director M. Night Shyamalan.

What Makes Him A Scrappy?[]

  • He's one of the most painfully obvious self-insert's in the history of filmmaking, he's destined to become the messiah of writers who will write a book that will change the world and because of it he'll be killed over it and become a martyr and remembered even more fondly because of it, which wouldn't be particularly weird if it wasn't because he also happens to be played by the director of the movie, which lead to accusations that the character was added simply to be a very obvious Gary Stu that served to shill over Shyamalan's controversial writing.
  • Since he's the only reason Story decided to visit in the first place it has lead to accusations the whole movie was made as a love letter to himself.
  • Even worse is that the character only serves as the reason why Story decided to visit in the first place but adds virtually nothing to the rest of the plot, making even more jarring the interruption of the setting to cut to Shyamalan's self insert and making a pointless addition with some viewers wishing Story had a different reason for her visit.

Redeemable Qualities[]

  • For what is worth, the character isn't neither annoying nor unlikeable.
  • Shyamalan seems to be one of the few actors that's taking the movie seriously.
  • Anna, her sister is considered one of the most enjoyable characters of the movie.

Take That, Scrappy[]

  • In his review of the movie, The Nostalgia Critic added sound effects to the scene where Story is telling Vick about his destiny to make it look like Shyamalan is having a boner.

Trivia[]

  • For the character. M. Night Shyamalan won a Golden Razzie for Worst Supporting Actor in 2007.
