Hath-Set, better known as Vandal Savage, is a major antagonist in the Arrowverse.
He is a former Ancient Egyptian priest who murdered his love-interest priestess Chay-Ara and her lover Prince Khufu on the night of an alien meteor shower, granting them all immortality via regeneration and reincarnation respectively, proceeding to roam the Earth for the following thousands of years to repeatedly kill Chay-Ara and Khufu’s reincarnations and ultimately achieve his goal of world domination. He is the archenemy of Hawkman, Hawkgirl and Rip Hunter.
He was portrayed by Casper Crump.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- Despite being one of the narratively strongest characters in the DC Universe, this version of Savage was essentially combined with Hawkman villain Hath-Set. This saw him written as creepily obsessed with Kendra Saunders, with his infatuation for her being his main motivation, despite being a conqueror. This is one of the main reasons why he is regarded as one of the worst villains in Arrowverse.
- Although Casper Crump's acting is not particularly horrible, he still failed to bring the menace and charisma the comic Savage had, and doesn't really match the brilliant strategist vibe in the series, making this Savage looking like an idiot and creep who is after Hawkgirl.
- He was not as old and experienced like his comic counterpart, considering his backstory was changed in the series. In the comics, Savage was a caveman who came contact with the meteorite which gave him high intellect and immortality, while in the series he was born as the priest Hath-Set, and the reason he became immortal was instead cursing himself, with Shayara and Khufu, and gets himself immortal.
- His sudden reappearance and redemption in the Season 4 finale was completely out of the place, considering Savage is irredeemable (the fact he used to be Pure Evil). It was widely disliked as he never showed any redeeming moments (aside from being nice to Ray and playing a game of Jenga with him) and the decision of redeeming him felt very forced and gratuitous.
- This Savage is so bad that even the writers have admitted that they ended up disliking the final vision of the character, and proceeded to subject him to several "Take That, Scrappy!" moments later in the series.
