~ Validar |
Validar is the secondary antagonist from Fire Emblem Awakening.
Validar is the leader of a cult called the Grimleal. A cult that worship the Fell Dragon Grima. Validar set out to restore his master back to life and destroy the world.
Validar is voiced by Kyle Hebert.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- Fans complain that Validar is a one dimensional villain. Nothing interesting goes one with Validar, all he does is to ensure a bad future for Grima's revival. Also every word that comes out of his mouth is usually the same thing. “The future is already written” or “You cannot change destiny”, making him also very repetitive.
- Fans also don’t like his design all that much. It’s either to blind looking, too goofy, or just ugly to look at.
- Much like with Garon, Validar is also very incompetent, but arguably even more so then Garon. A good example such as in "Chapter 13 Of Sacred Blood" where Validar exposes both himself and Grima to both Chrom and Robin and both of them easily recognize him as the guy who try to assassinate Emmeryn. And when he learns about Lucina coming from the future he does absolutely nothing about it at all.
- After Validar is killed back in Chapter 6 Foreseer, the future version Grima (his own master) had to personally save him from death, which doesn't do a good job at making him look like a threatening antagonist.
- Everytime his plans backfire on him Validar always panicking when things don’t go as he planned. He doesn’t even come up with a backup plan in theses instances.
- Even though Validar is the secondary antagonist in the game he contributed absolutely nothing to the plot. Instead Future Grima ends up traveling back in time with Lucina and they resurrect the present Grima instead so the two can merge together into one. Meaning that Validar did nothing to help Grima and he gets killed off as soon they finally enter the picture.
- Even though the previous ruler of Ylisse attacked and killed Grimleal in the past, Validar never mentions this at all which feels like alot of wasted potential that could've been used for Validar's feelings towards Chrom.
- Nothing is ever revealed about Validar's wife or how and why she married him or if she was part of the Grimleal, which again is wasted potential.
- His whole schtick with Aversa in the spotpass content is overly complex, unexplained and ineffective.
- Validar; killed Aversa's family, erased her memories, inserted fake memories into her mind, and finally brainwashed her to use as a slave.
- And yet despite Aversa being a mere slave whom can easily break the spell of loyalty placed upon her by simply going to the Wellspring of Truth, which everyone is shown to know about, Validar entrusts Aversa with some very important tasks and doesn't assign any men to ensure she doesn't turn on him.
- Making matters worse is in the Japanese version, there is no indication there is anything special about Aversa, meaning Validar put in a huge and unnecessary amount of work simply to get an ordinary and highly unreliable slave for no real reason.
- Simply using a more competent and loyal underling like Algol or Jamil to do his dirty work would've been much more effective.
- There's no explanation on why Validar or his religion wants to revive Grima to begin with as its made clear they're aware of how Grima will kill everyone including them.
- This is unfortunate as Validar gets alot of screentime, but never any development or motivation.
- Validar is very much overused in Fire Emblem Warriors; the game constantly uses him to play any villain role in the Adventure maps, even when Validar clearly doesn't fit the role like a burly bandit leader and even Gharnef, whom is already a character in the same game, raising the question of why Gharnef doesn't just play himself?
- Compared to other Dark Priest villains like Gharnef, Manfroy, Nergal or even Algol from the same game, Validar lacks charisma, competence, backstory, and motivation.
