My first proposal and it’s about a character I was considering, but was never really sure on. It’s Punishment Time for Kurokuma, the Ultimate Wannabe Gangster!
Who is he?
Kurokuma is one of the two secondary antagonists of the Danganronpa spinoff, Ultimate Despair Girls, and a major antagonist in Summer Camp S.
He is the advisor for the Warriors of Hope who intends on helping them to kill all adults. However, thanks to Kurokuma's idiotic behavior and nonsensical ramblings, he is seen as more of an annoyance by the other characters.
What do people hate about him?
Keep in mind, I have not played UDG, but I have seen reviews and clips.
From what I’ve seen, not many fans actually like Kurokuma, I’ve seen some say that he’s worse than Hifumi Yamada or even Haiji Towa. Here’s what I’ve gathered:
His voice is seen by fans as extremely grating. It’s very high-pitched and loud, not to mention that he speaks in an exaggerated Brooklyn accent. It’s not helping that he never stops talking and often goes on nonsensical tangents.
Secondly, although he’s supposed to be the comic relief of the game, many of his jokes aren’t seen as funny by players. Examples include pretending to short circuit only to declare that he can never be silenced and commenting on Monaca (a twelve year old)'s chest after she bumps into him.
Thirdly, he’s superfluous to the game’s story. His existence is mainly to tell jokes and annoy the characters. When he actually contributes, it’s in a boss fight that comes and goes before he is subdued.
Finally, he’s in general wasted potential. When he was advertised, fans were excited for a wise-cracking villain who was manipulating the WOH to bring despair, only for him to show up as the comic relief who, as previously stated, is pointless to the story. While he is an option to kill, the game doesn’t utilize this well.
Saving Graces?
- Hate Sink: He is a villain, but he’s meant to be the comic relief whose annoyance is meant to be funny.
- Funny Moments: He has a few funny moments, such as his line before Toko blasts him being "Wait! I was about to donate to charity!" and him thinking Nagito was coming out of the closet rather than giving them information, however, these moments aren’t brought up very much in critiques compared to his unfunny jokes.
- Fanbase: He does seem to have a fanbase, but many of his fans admit that that’s an unpopular opinion and I’ve seen some people say that while they like him, he was definitely a bad part of UDG. Additionally, he doesn’t seem to be discussed too much in Japan, but I was able to find a popularity poll that put him pretty low, although it’s not concrete evidence, it’s something.
