What's that? Nobody wants to play with ya? *bursts out laughing* Nobody wants to play with ya, 'cause nobody likes ya! Ever since you got here, you've been a pink pain in the neck. As usual, I'm the only one around here with the guts to tell you the truth! Everybody says that Kirby is nothin' but trouble. If I was you, I'd fly the coop cause you ain't welcome here, Sonny! With you outta the way, things would finally get back to normal, and I could take over this cottage permanent. Booooy, wouldn't that be the day? Huh? Kirby? Where'd that boy go?
~ Tokkori's most infamous speech towards Kirby.

Tokkori is a supporting character in the anime Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, an adaptation of the Kirby video game series. He is a yellow parakeet who lives with Kirby.

He was voiced by Kevin Kolack in English, and Fujiko Takimoto in Japanese.

What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]

  • Before even knowing about him, viewers can already be off putted by his presence as an anime exclusive character, coming from an anime adaptation to a video game with tons of potential characters to choose from. He is likely meant to be based off Twizzy, Pitch, or the Chickies, though this is mere speculation. He could've easily been replaced with any other Kirby ally or enemy.
    • Tiff and Tuff are also anime original characters, however, they are likable and properly serve their roles as main characters and proper caretakers for Kirby.
    • While Escargoon is also another somewhat unnecessary anime original character, he does have fans and likable moments, isn't as annoying, and he actually is written as a villain.
  • His voice, as a parakeet, is really annoying, and his design, with his constant scowl, gives him a very punchable appearance.
  • His overall personality is that he's a jerk to the characters, especially Kirby, usually insulting or belittling everyone in ways fans never found funny, and only came off as mean-spirited. His insults to Kirby especially felt cruel, because Kirby could never respond back, which comes off as Tokkori taking advantage of Kirby's infantile mind to bully him as much as he can. And because his insults rarely get a response, there's no follow up or reaction to make them funny.
  • Despite appearing in many episodes, he doesn't develop much as a character until 70 episodes in for this 100 episode series, in the episode "Buccaneer Birdy," an episode that gave him a minor redemption with relinquishing his "royal status" at the end and feeling unappreciated, but still have him be a jerk for a good chunk of the time and his reason for stepping down being that he wants to keep making fun of everyone, overall resetting the status quo and having him learn absolutely nothing. In fact, in the scene where he says he feels unappreciated, he then says "it's not my fault that I'm superior to everybody else, right?"
  • Perhaps his most infamous role that solidified his Scrappy status, in "Kirby Takes the Cake," a saddened Kirby tells Tokkori that everyone has been ignoring him. Tokkori, somehow not knowing that everyone has been planning an anniversary party for Kirby, coldly tells him that nobody likes him, and goes into a tirade about how much he and everyone else hates Kirby, even outright suggesting him to leave. During this, he does not notice Kirby sadly packing and leaving, taking his word for it. Once he does notice that Kirby left, he has the audacity to actually be confused why Kirby ran off. To make matters worse, Tokkori doesn't get any punishment for this, aside from a scolding from Tiff and being forced to get Kirby back. And when he does find Kirby, he just yells at him some more and even says "Hey, next time you run away, tell me where you're goin' would ya?" like he had no cause in making Kirby upset. Tokkori doesn't apologize to his friend, and he doesn't even attend the party, which is right outside his house. It is no exaggeration that Tokkori is more of a villain in this episode than King Dedede and Escargoon were.
  • While he isn’t necessarily meant to be liked, he is also a Karma Houdini, given how the most the characters give him for his actions is a minor scolding. And he wasn’t intended to be annoying.
  • While most of the anime exclusive main characters have had representation following the anime (Tiff and Tuff appear in some artwork and Escargoon and NME Sales Guy appear in the Kirby Mass Attack sub game, as well as a few other one-off monsters appearing here and there), Tokkori, despite being one of the most recurring characters in the series, lacks any representation in any post-anime media, showing that even the creators have forgotten about him.

Trivia[]

  • Tokkori is the second Kirby character to be a Scrappy, after Dark Nebula.
    • He is the first one to be from the anime.
