Tobias (Takuto in the original Japanese version) is a minor character in Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl. He is a Pokémon Trainer and a participant of the Lily of the Valley Conference, who defeated Ash Ketchum in the Sinnoh League and became the Champion of Sinnoh.
He is voiced by Hiroki Takahashi in the Japanese version and J. Michael Tatum in the English dub.
What Makes Him A Scrappy?[]
- He's disliked for owning overpowered Pokémon such as Darkrai and Latios in a setting where most Legendaries and Mythical Pokémon are not frequently used in tournaments, giving him a significantly unfair advantage over his competitors.
- Related to this, fans also dislike how the anime never provides an explanation for how Tobias either obtained them or was even permitted to use them.
- Him defeating Ash is seen as the point when Ash being unable to win the league started to become forced.
- To add salt to the wound, throughout the Diamond & Pearl seasons Ash had started to become a surprisingly competent, mature and skilled trainer. He evolved his Pokémon, learned numerous new moves and created new strategies after losing battles to improve the places where he was aways weak. Thanks to this development, Ash stopped being the same idiot trainer who only won thanks to plot armor and became a potential deserving champion for a Pokémon League. Tobias ruined all of this for fans, as his existence threw away all of Ash's development to unfairly steal the victory and vanish to never be seen again.
- His biggest criticism is that his character is nothing more than a walking plot device, having no backstory and a flat personality. His only purpose is to exist as a way for Ash to lose the Lily of Valley Conference, and afterwards he is never seen again in the anime.
- Among Ash's rivals who defeated him in the league, Tobias is easily the most hated one. Even Cameron, despite his detractors, has the defenders Tobias lacks for a justified reason. As mentioned above, Tobias was simply a poorly written plot device for Ash to not win the Conference, in the process ruining Ash's development during the Diamond & Pearl series.
