The Tiki Tak Tribe are the main antagonists of Donkey Kong Country Returns. They are the henchmen of Tiki Tong.

What Makes Them Scrappies?[]

  • First and foremost, and with the exception of their leader Tiki Tong, who is more Base Breaking Character than Scrappy, the Tiki Tak Tribe lacked the personality that made both their predecessors, the Kremling Krew, and their successors, the Snomads, much better received, as they were arguably the most wooden enemies in the franchise. This is due to their often boring designs and lack of speech.
  • Many of the more important members of the tribe, all of whom are based on instruments, end up brainwashing other creatures to fight for them. Because the boss fights are against the hypnotized animals instead of the elite tribesmen, it makes the Tiki Tak Tribe look pathetic on their own and people end up remembering the creatures the elite Tikis were brainwashing rather than the Tikis themselves as a result.
  • The fact that the Kremlings were initially replaced by the Tiki Tak Tribe may have bothered some fans, but when King K. Rool wasn't anywhere to be found in Donkey Kong Country Returns, what were once Base Breaking Characters at best veered into scrappy territory almost immediately, as many fans expected at least King K. Rool to appear and were upset by his and the Kremlings' absence. Making this perspective on the Tiki Tak Tribe worse is the dogged persistence in which the Tiki Tak Tribe are pushed onto Donkey Kong fans by Nintendo, such as being featured in advertising for Super Nintendo World over the more recognizable Kremlings, making it seem less like the Tiki Tak Tribe are popular and more like Nintendo is doubling down on a bad idea and appearing out of touch with their own fans' wants and needs.
  • Their scheme is almost an exact rip-off of the Kremlings' original plan to rob Donkey Kong of his banana hoard, making them seem even more unoriginal and bland. While players do see the Tikis making more of themselves using the aforementioned bananas in the Factory area, this seems pointless and very confusing when one remembers that several lesser Tikis appeared when Tiki Tong's tower emerged from the volcano at the beginning of the game, and with DKCR not giving context clues, there was no explanation as to why the Tiki Tak Tribe were doing any of this. In other words, not only was their scheme unoriginal, but it also didn't even make any sense.
