The Rival, also known as Edward Clariss, is a minor antagonist in the DC 2014 show from The CW titled The Flash.
He was portrayed by Todd Lasance.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- His design is disliked and widely criticized. The fans of the series consider his suit to be lame and unappealing.
- He was viewed as being too goofy. He straight up has unintentionally comical moments like him yelling that he doesn't have a rival, or him terrorizing the city to "prove he's the fastest." These moments make him look childish in many viewers eyes, instead of threatening.
- He is criticized for being too different from his comics counterpart. He never meets Jay Garrick, he is Wally West's nemesis, and his personality is changed. Those are some examples for his general negative fan reception pertaining to his changes.
- He is unceremoniously killed by Savitar in prison, which made some fans view his character as pointless.
- Besides his writing, the acting from Todd Lasance was also a point of detraction for some fans.
- His final scenes make him a scapegoat, but the fans don't care for him because he was considered too annoying. The writers portrayed The Rival as victim in the end, also setting up Savitar's ruthlessness, but the inherently sympathetic trait of a painful and unwarranted death did not get the auidence to sympathize with him.
