The Heffleys’ Pig is a minor character in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid franchise.
He is a pig that was adopted by the Heffleys after Manny won it in a contest fair. Throughout living with the family, he manages to burden them in various ways, ranging from having all the food and drinks in the minibars during their vacation to vomiting in Rodrick’s van.
He was portrayed by an unnamed Juliana pig in the film adaptation of The Long Haul.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- The pig serves as a stark contrast to the series’ realistic tone: it is cartoonishly human for an animal. Several examples include it regularly walking on its hind legs, taking off collars despite lacking thumbs, and making sentences.
- While most pigs understand human gestures, and a select few pigs have been capable of walking on their hind legs, none have made actual English sentences or opened canned drinks, and most pigs are biologically incapable of walking on two legs, let alone be as smart as the Heffleys’ pig.
- In addition to being smart, he is smug and arrogant to all the Heffleys, further ostracizing himself from the family.
- Even when not factoring in the Heffleys’ pig being outlandishly intelligent for a pig, it mostly causes trouble for the family (except for Manny); Susan herself admits they never wanted the animal in the first place, and only entered the contest in The Long Haul for fun. Instances of the pig causing trouble include:
- Trying to escape from the Heffleys and nearly getting killed, having all the food and drinks in the minibar (and forcing Frank to pay much more money than needed), and biting Greg’s finger. When the family sends it to a petting zoo, Manny’s affection for it causes the family to unwillingly return to it, making the pig a pet for the Heffleys and continue being a load.
- Eating all the candy corn Greg won in Double Down, causing it to be sick and vomit in Rodrick’s van before they arrive at the vet, causing Greg to vomit outside. This gets bad enough that a neighbor calls the police, and even though Greg tries to explain that the pig caused the problem, Susan punishes Greg for something he didn't do. The pig is later seen eating the gummy worms Greg is saving for a movie; thus, it ruined Greg's supplies for the latter's own movie.
- While some fans consider the pig being sent to obedience school satisfying, due to how taxing it has been to the Heffleys, others are frustrated that the pig never got an impactful punishment for his deeds.
- While the pig may have moments considered to be comedic, almost all of them show how burdensome rather than how funny it is.
- The film adaptation of the Heffleys' pig isn't much better, considering it carries over nearly all the same flaws the novel version has.
- Overall, the pig has been consistently cited as one of (if not the worst) the worst-written characters in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid novel series, with its debut in the The Long Haul indicating the decline in the novels’ quality. In fact, when the pig was written out of the series in The Meltdown, fans were happy to see it gone.
