“ | Oh captain, my captain. | „ |
~ Tek Knight to Homelander. |
“ | Everybody always has the same holes. Over and over again, it gets so fucking boring. Sometimes, you just got to make your own. And then fuck them. | „ |
~ Tek Knight's infamous quote to Hughie as he prepares to cut a hole in him and rape him. |
Robert Vernon, better known as Tek Knight, is a supporting antagonist in Season 4 of Amazon's 2019 adaptation of The Boys and a minor antagonist in Season 1 of its 2023 spin-off series Gen V. He is loosely based on the character with the same name, who is a parody of both Iron Man and Batman.
In the TV series, Tek Knight is portrayed as a wealthy man, who has superhuman powers relating to deduction-like vision, hearing, smell, taste, and touch. Like most supers, he is viewed as a heroic man who is the star of his own TV show, but in secret he is actually an evil elitist with supremacist views.
He was portrayed by Derek Wilson.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- Many fans despise his entire sexual assault scene for Hughie is used for dark comedy purposes, finding it offensive and reliant on shock humor.
- Despite many fans being excited for his potential, they were massively disappointed in how little he added to the plot despite all he was set up to do, even being mentioned years before his debut. Though he does team up with Homelander, this ends up going nowhere and he dies as part of a cheap Sex Dungeon subplot that dragged for too long.
- Many dislike how his character varies from his comic counterpart (contrasting how most characters are considered improvements over their comic counterparts):
- In the comics, Tek Knight was concerned with his condition of obsessing over holes and wanted to keep people away from him so he would not bring harm to them. This also includes his sidekicks as well, with Laddio going on a quest that Tek Knight made up as a way to protect him. This characterization is completely absent in the show with Tek Knight having no problem of who he harms to the point of becoming an actual rapist and imprisoning Laddio in his sex dungeon.
- In additional, Tek Knight in the comics is regretful of his impulsive actions relating to his condition and was seeking psychological help, but in the show he doesn’t.
- In one moment in the comics, Tek Knight tried to save the Earth from a giant meteor and died at the end thinking he really saved the world. Despite it being a hallucination from him getting hit by a wheelbarrow while saving a mother and child, he seemed genuine in wanting to help people. However, in the show, everything he does is a facade to manipulate people while trying to flaunt his wealth and success to those inferior to him.
- Many fans were disappointed that the show did not reveal his armored suit, which was implied in the show and felt they did not show much what he can do when it comes to combat. Even those who did not mind as much felt it would've been interesting to see.
Trivia[]
- Only the TV version of Tek Knight counts as a Scrappy, as people generally enjoy his comic counterpart, despite the comics being less popular.
