Syrena is a character from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. She is a beautiful, enigmatic mermaid who swims against the tide of her more lethally-minded sisters of the sea. She also serves as one of the two deuteragonists (alongside Philip Swift) throughout the film.
She was portrayed by French-Spanish actress Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey.
What Makes Her A Scrappy?[]
- Like her lover, many fans dislike her out of finding her to be a boring character with no major personality traits or character arcs beyond being a bland love interest for Philip and a replacement for Elizabeth (already a base-breaking character but with many loyal fans.)
- Unlike the other females leads of the franchise like Elizabeth, Angelica or Carina, there's not much of her character besides her relationship with Philip.
- The mermaids were highly considered a high point in an otherwise polarizing movie for coming out as true to the original myth being both mysterious and creepy but beautiful as well as effective and fascinating villains in her short screen time so some fans were understandably disappointed that the one mermaid with the most screen time is reduced to be a scared woobie with none of the aspects that made the remaining mermaids interesting.
- The romance between her and Philip is considered an poor Replacement of the love story between Will and Elizabeth, which was already an divisive aspect of the original trilogy but most fans would argue that pretty much every problem that they had with Will and Elizabeth was made worse with the pair or makes them appreciate the love story more in retrospective.
- The romance between Will and Elizabeth developed since they were kids and even then it took them a while to confess they are in love and even longer to get together. Meanwhile the two fall in love almost immediately despise Philip being the one that captured her and Syrena being a part of a herd of creatures that tried to kill him and his crew
- Most of their scenes together involve the two characters recite quite corny and exaggeratedly sweet dialogue professing their love to each other which comes off as a poor contrast to Will and Elizabeth whose dialogue was more natural and had enough awesome moments to balance it out particularly with their wedding happening in the middle of the battle in the last movie.
- Neither of them interact much with Jack or any other member of the crew while Will and Elizabeth had very stablished relationships with the rest of the cast and their love story was a central part of the story while Philip and Syrena only exist for a minor subplot.
- Some fans also wondered what was the point of a second love story considering Jack and Angelica were already a thing and both characters were more important that Philip and Syrena..
- A minor aspect but for Spanish-speaking viewers, the naming of Syrena as a way to stop calling her mermaid can come up as hard to take seriously considering the name literally means mermaid in Spanish.
- One of the final scenes involve her giving Jack the Chalices with absolutely no explanation on why she decided to help Jack or how she got there considering they never interacted before and as far as she knows she's helping Blackbeard, the man that has being torturing her and almost killed her lover.
Trivia[]
- Is commonly argued that the poor reception to Syrena and her fellow scrappy Philip Swift to be the major reason Will and Elizabeth started gaining a more favorable reception with the years and probably part of the reason they were brought back in the fifth movie.
