The Sultan of Shiraz is a minor character in the first segment of the 1994 movie Scooby-Doo! in Arabian Nights, which involves a gender-swapped adaptation of Aladdin, with Yogi Bear and Boo-Boo as the Genies.
He was voiced by Brian Cummings.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- The segment he's on has being commonly criticized of being a mockbuster of the 1992 Disney animated movie Aladdin (despite both being an adaptation of a very old folk tale), since they both came out the same year, and integrates some of the differences added in Aladdin into this version of the story, which would make some viewers consider every character a Scrappy, However, even those who do enjoy the segment tend to dislike the Sultan.
- The major reason for hatred towards the character is the ending of the story, where unlike the Disney version, this Sultan refuses to change tradition so the Prince and Aliyah-Din can marry, despite the latter having just saved his entire kingdom, which makes him come up as ungrateful and a bad parent, since he's making his son miserable for something no one but him cares about.
- He only accepts the marriage once he discovers Aliyah-Din is actually the long-lost Princess of Serandibe, which as some viewers have pointed up, flies in the face of the morals of the original story and only serves to try to hide the evident short's nature of being a mockbuster.
