NOTE: This page only gives information about the 2017 version of Justice League, as the version from Zack Snyder's Justice League is not considered a Scrappy, thus only the information of the 2017 version of Steppenwolf should be put here. |
“ | Noble Queen, why do you fight? After the Unity, you will join my legions and you will know the righteousness of power. You will love me. You all will. | „ |
~ Steppenwolf monologuing to Queen Hippolyta about how she would love him for some reason. |
Steppenwolf is the main antagonist of the 2017 DC Extended Universe film Justice League and a posthumous antagonist in the 2018 film Aquaman.
He was portrayed by Ciaran Hinds.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- He is universally viewed as one of the blandest villains in the history of superhero cinema who has shallow character depth and uninteresting motivations. Along with Malekith the Accursed, he is an unprecedented codifier of the "Generic Doomsday Villain" concept.
- His ultimate goal is to destroy Earth because he suffered his only defeat there and wants that humiliating event erased from the universe’s memory, even though the only ones who bore witness to it were the Amazons, Atlanteans, and ancestors of the modern human race. This motivation comes across as much more petty and childishly vengeful than intimidating.
- He tells Queen Hippolyta that after the Unity is complete, she and all the other women on Themyscira will all fall in love with him.
- After blocking a missile, he hypocritically says that humans are primitive beings, ignoring that he is wearing medieval armor and wielding a battle axe.
- His defeat is anticlimactic. He literally loses because his Parademons attack him for his fear of being disarmed, and even then, he desperately spews frantic death threats at the protagonists before vanishing into a portal even as Parademons go after him. Some people even compared his demise with Pitch Black's defeat in Rise of the Guardians or Scar's death from The Lion King.
- He was originally going to have some depth to his character, like being tired of working for Darkseid or even interacting with the cosmic tyrant. However, it was cut from the film, causing negative reception, as this wastes potential complexity he may have had, and comes out as nothing more than a generic destroyer with even more bland motives.
- Even people who like the Whedon version of Justice League mostly find him to be a big disappointment.
Trivia[]
- Only the 2017 version of Steppenwolf qualifies, as Steppenwolf from Zack Snyder's Justice League was much more well-received, owing to a much better appearance, interesting motives, impressive battle sequences, and being a significantly more complex character in comparison.
