Stanley is the main protagonist of Don Bluth's 7th animated feature film (and his most critically panned one) A Troll In Central Park. He is a good-natured troll who was banished from his world for "giving a bad name to trolls everywhere" and was sent away to Manhattan, New York where he met Gus and Rosie.
He was voiced by the late Dom DeLuise.
What Makes Him A Scrappy?[]
- He has an infamous reputation for being one of the most poorly-written main protagonists in an animated film, as he was supposed to come across as an endearing character for kids to enjoy, but instead, he comes across as an annoying and creepy character mainly due to his flat personality and sickly sweet nature that isn't at all charming in the slightest.
- His personality as mentioned above, feels almost nonexistent, as all he does is smile and say the most saccharine things in existence without any of it feeling relatable even to young children.
- His design is ugly and tries way too hard to be cutesy.
- Most of the scenes involving him amount to nothing and are just filler that are only there just because the plot demands them, which is ironic since he is supposed to be the main protagonist of the film, you know, the most important character of any piece of media, but he would rather focus on creating flowers that are just as irritating as him and singing songs with horrible lyrics that aren't entertaining in the slightest.
- His quote "Anything is real, starts with a dream" makes absolutely no sense since in real life, dreaming will not solve anything other than to ease your slumber. This can also serve as a bad lesson to teach kids since they might get the wrong idea and think that dreaming alone without doing anything about it will automatically make their dreams come true. This indirectly comes across as a mockery of Disney (which sort of makes sense since this film was distributed by their rival Warner Bros.) since they misunderstood the phrase "Follow your dreams" meaning that you yourself have to make them come true and dreaming alone won't just do it for you.
- The infamous scene where Rosie gives him a kiss comes across as pedophilic and creepy as he himself feels way too excited about it, keep in mind that Rosie herself is just a toddler while Stanley himself seems to be an adult. This can also come across as zoophilic since Stanley is a troll, not a human.
- The scene where he covers New York in flowers not only comes across as illogical since flowers cannot grow on roads, buildings, or cars, but also disturbing because it feels more like something a supervillain would do, such as Poison Ivy from Batman or Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors. In fact, this has led to many people theorizing that Stanley is the true villain of the movie and Gnorga was the real hero, preventing him from causing this to happen in the Kingdom of Trolls.
- Overall, he is one of the main reasons as to why the film was critically panned and did extremely poorly at the box office, earning only over $71,000 (Possibly also due to the film's low marketing and limited release in theaters) which is a lot less than other films released the same year.
- In fact, not even his creator Don Bluth likes him and regretted making him alongside the film.
