SpongeBob SquarePants is the deuteragonist of Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie and Plankton: The Movie.
He is a naive and extremely dimwitted sea sponge who lives in Bikini Bottom and works at the Krusty Krab.
As expected, Tom Kenny reprises his role as SpongeBob for the Netflix movies.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- While the original SpongeBob is disliked by many, he still has numerous defenders. The same can't be said for this version of the character, who reaches near-unanimously levels of hate.
- He is widely criticized for being incapable of feeling any emotion beyond happiness.
- Perhaps the most infamous example is when Sue Nahmee is about to split him into thousands of miniature clones of himself, essentially killing him. While he eventually does realise the seriousness of the situation, hes initially completely excited and unconcerned for his safety.
- While SpongeBob can be annoying or irritable in some instances, he reaches unbearable levels of insufferability in Saving Bikini Bottom in particular, which is where the hate for the Netflix version of the beloved sea sponge mainly comes from. Alongside almost always being happy, hes constantly either laughing at his own unfunny jokes or being obnoxiously annoying. This gets extremely irritable very fast, and it also stands as the main reason of why the Netflix version of SpongeBob is so hated.
- When Sue Nahmee kidnaps all of Bikini Bottom, he infamously comments about he cant "demand" his streaming videos on demand. Not only was this a cheap joke made to make the movie seem modern, but the line comes off as SpongeBob being more concerned about his streaming videos than his own friends.
- In one scene, he tickles the feet of several pool-goers, which many viewers found extremely disturbing and perverted. This scene's existence is made far worse given SBB came out only a few months after the 'Quiet on Set' documentary released against Nickelodeon and Dan Schneider, who has since become notorious for foot fetish.
- Important to mention: Most of the pool-goers are children which only makes it worse.
- He's criticized for not adding anything to the plot of the movie, with his only contributions being comic relief, and he's not even considered a good one.
- While his appearance in Plankton: The Movie was received with a much more positive reception by fans for fixing a lot of the issues SpongeBob had in SBB, with him no longer being annoying and contributing to the plot more, his interactions with Plankton were criticised for not exactly being interesting and mostly rehashing the conversations the two had in Sponge Out of Water. As well as that, he also does still have some bad moments from the movie:
- He criticises Mr. Krabs for "spying" over other people, which was not only something already said in the Truth or Square Special but it's also completely nonsensical for SpongeBob to be upset at Krabs for this. Hes simply watching the surveillance cameras over the Krusty Krab, his own property, which is completely normal and fully justified since hes looking to catch Plankton trying to steal the Secret Formula. The line made more sense in Truth or Square, because there Krabs was spying on the citizens of Bikini Bottom without their knowledge.
- When Mr. Krabs also revealed his intention to catch Plankton, SpongeBob said it felt "a little harsh." This feels somewhat out of character for SpongeBob, given he knows Plankton is always making schemes to try and steal the formula, as well how he had helped Krabs with numerous other questionable schemes without hesitation.
- Overall SpongeBob's portrayal in the Netflix films, mainly Saving Bikini Bottom, have been heavily criticised for how terribly SpongeBob is mischaracterised as an overly joyous, happy-go-lucky, annoying joke machine. Some have even wondered if the people writing the film even knew anything about the show beforehand. Fortunately his appearance in Plankton: The Movie was far better received thanks to Mr. Lawrence writing him far better than how he was in SBB.
