Screwball is a minor antagonist in the main game and a major antagonist in The City That Never Sleeps DLC of the 2018 superhero video game Marvel's Spider-Man, the first installent of the Insomniac's eponymous video game series.

She is an egotistical and selfish snuff filmer that aspires to gain popularity worldwide, so she takes to kidnapping civilians and setting up challenges all across New York to blackmail Spider-Man into participating in them with the threat of something bad happening if he doesn't do as she asks as a way of gaining popularity through his involvement. At the end of the DLC, she is eventually imprisoned by Spider-Man and taken back to prison just like what happened previously, only it being a much longer sentence this time around.

She was voiced by Stephanie Lemelin.

What Makes Her a Scrappy?[]

  • Obviously she was written to be hated for what she does and is a parody of modern influencer culture, and in execution people do hate her for that, but what people hate more about Screwball is that she is a spotlight stealer who completely overstays her welcome throughout the entire game and the DLC, and steals screentime away from far more interesting characters such as Black Cat & Yuri Watanabe, which in of it's self is extremely ironic given how narcissistic she is.
  • While she isn't poorly voice acted per se, even having a hammy performance, her voice itself becomes incredibly irritating and ear-grating to listen to after a while, being a very screechy and squeaky voice that makes nails scratching a chalkboard sound angelic in comparison, especially with the very condescending & rude remarks she tends to make.
  • Her first mission in the overall game was fine and even then she was annoying so her being arrested after that was seen as great, and fans would have preferred it if her arc ended there.
  • Screwball was already kinda disliked in the main game, and giving her a whole new arc taking up most of the DLC just feels like a disservice, when there are plenty of other Spiderman Villains to choose from and they chose one of the worst of the bunch.
  • if Screwball was just a simple side mission for main game and didn't show up in the DLC she probably wouldn't have made it to scrappy status, however when she returns in the DLC and sets up Spiderman on challenges that take up 3 acts of the DLC it just puts the final nail in the coffin for her being a scrappy and it is a chore to playthrough all of her missions.
  • Overall an extremely one dimensional and flat character who just does bad stuff for views who makes the other villain of the DLC Hammerhead who is already a flat character seem way more interesting than her.
  • Her missions in the DLC as a whole are basically reskinned and tougher Taskmaster challenges
  • Even fans who praise the game, think she is the worst part and dread her missions on repeat 100% playthroughs.
  • Her being constantly being a karma houdini until her defeat is seen as one of the worst parts of her character.
  • Her overall defeat of finally being arrested is portrayed as a "take that Scrappy" moment but fans feel like it is way too little of a punishment overall especially considering all the things she puts Spiderman/ the player through and the worst part is that if you want a character that is meant to be hated's defeat satisfying to the audience you have to add something to make all the times that you hated the character finally come to a close and feel like it's a reward for enduring them, like a villainous breakdown, a humiliating defeat or making them an Asshole Victim, but because Screwball is so full of herself and arrogant that she doesn't breakdown at all, has a lackluster reaction after being defeated and doesn't have a regular boss fight like with every other main spiderman villain, it just doesn't make it satisfying at all to finally defeat her.
  • The narrative tries to portray her in a sympathetic light because Peter thinks she is like this because she is lonely and wants friends, which is just a flat out pathetic attempt to add some hidden depths and is no excuse at all which makes her unintentionally unsympathetic and it is in very poor taste considering what she does.
  • Sadly even if she is a parody, she is arguably one of the more realistic villains of the bunch and even that is saying a lot, fans hate this because it is meant to be a fantasy world and taking down evil influencers who do bad stuff or even commit to terrorism for views just leaves a bad taste in your mouth, especially when in the real world there are terrorists who do so.
  • While she is meant to play a similar role to the Riddler from the Batman Arkham series, at least Riddler can be entertaining at times, while Screwball is just... not entertaining at all.
  • Her not returning in sequels is praised.
