Lieutenant John Scarfield is the secondary antagonist of the 2017 Disney film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean series.
He was portrayed by David Wenham,
What Makes Him A Scrappy?[]
- He's seen as a waste of David Wenham's talents for such an unimportant character.
- Many fans weren't fond of the character feeling like it was an almost beat-by-beat copy of fan-favorite Norrington in terms of role in the story with the major difference being that unlike James Norrington who was a complex Anti-Villain constantly debating between his duty and doing the right thing, Scarfield is more a generic jerkass that's isn't particularly interesting.
- Some fans also were disappointed that The Spaniard, one of the most well liked characters from the previous movie didn't take the Place of the new Hero Antagonist instead of him.
- His job as a villain lefts a lot to be desired as well, he might as well be the worst antagonist of the series even taking Blackbeard's place as that. He's defeated twice on screen rather easily, both quite humiliating and doesn't seem to get any major or minor victories over the heroes beyond capturing an unconscious Henry Turner and briefly capture Carina and Jack at the beginning.
- He's killed off by the real antagonist of the movie before he can give the Black Pearl crew any real fight or get any real development, which make many fans feel he was pointless to the story and the franchise if the character is not coming back.
