NOTE: This page is only about the cinematic version of Sarah Harding, as her novel version is actually a beloved character for how cool she was. Thus, only the cinematic version's information should be put here.
Sarah Harding is a major protagonist in the Jurassic Park franchise.
She is a friend of Ian Malcolm who secretly agrees to go to the islands to study the dinosaurs and helps Ian to stop the T-Rex's rampage.
She was portrayed by Julianne Moore.
What Makes Her a Scrappy?[]
- Despite being a renowned animal behaviorist, she rarely demonstrates any actual skill in handling animals and instead makes many incompetent mistakes such as ignoring Ian's warnings or carrying around a baby T-Rex despite knowing the mother would attack her for it. All of her misjudged moments make her profession an informed attribute rather than anything else.
- Due to the problems above, she routinely causes problems for Ian and his crew, such as the aforementioned baby T-Rex causing a dinosaur attack, approaching a stegosaurus family without any precautions, and walking through the forest in T-Rex blood despite knowing that the dinosaurs have a good sense of smell. The fact that these actions have caused the death of dozens of people onscreen doesn’t help.
- While Ian does call her out for her behavior, she never receives much punishment for her actions, making her a Karma Houdini.
- Arguably the worst aspect about her is how negatively different she is from her novel counterpart. The novel Sarah was a very competent and badass person, who also serves as Kelly's mentor/aunt figure. She loses all of this in the film and game adaptations and seems to instead take the role of Richard Levine from the books, who was deliberately written to be incompetent.
Trivia[]
- Originally the cinematic version of Sarah Harding shared her Scrappy status with Nick Van-Owen, who was her accomplice in sabotaging InGen hunter's camp and emptied Roland Tembo's bullets even after the latter saved his life despite the former's role at the death of the latter's men. However, Nick became a base-breaking character over time due to his strong moral code in regards to the environment, while Sarah retained her Scrappy status.
