Samuel James "Sam" Witwicky is one of the three main protagonists of the original live action Transformers movies by Michael Bay based off of the Hasbro toy line of the same name (along with Optimus Prime and Cade Yeager).
He was portrayed by Shia LaBeouf, who also portrayed Mutt Williams in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- From Revenge of the Fallen onwards he is nothing but an overtly whiny jerk all throughout which gets worse and worse throughout the films, and thus ends up as a very unlikable protagonist that people have actually rooted for straight up Hate Sinks like Dylan Gould instead for being more interesting anyway.
- Is a spotlight-stealer that steals screen time and focus away from the Transformers, many of which is to deal with mostly dull and contentious subplots like relationship issues with Mikaela.
- Is given quite poor performance by Shia LaBeouf who mostly screams half of his lines that as told, which makes him pretty annoying.
- Pretty passive protagonist whose roles in the films often amount to simply "hold the MacGuffin of the film and run around with it".
- Him infamously screaming "Optimus!" can get on many viewers' nerves pretty quick and make him sound annoying.
- Despite the movies trying to frame him as a generic zero to hero, his flip-flop dialogue combined with his flippant and whinny characterization makes him too inconsistent and annoying to be relatable or heroic.
- He was so disliked that when he was written out of the fourth film (being replaced by the more positively received Cade Yeager), and the fifth film implying he was killed (even by putting his funny-looking photo), there was little to no fanfare and outrage over it.
- Although he does have a few saving graces, like resurrecting Optimus with the Matrix and killing Dylan, it's overall too minor to make him likable, and he is still a whiny and unlikable character.
