NOTE: This article focuses on Road Runner's portrayal in the Rudy Larriva shorts produced by Format Films between 1965 and 1966. |
The Road Runner is a major character in the Looney Tunes franchise.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- The most infamous trait of Larriva's Road Runner is that he often breaks the established rules of the Road Runner cartoons laid down by Chuck Jones himself. The primary one being that Road Runner cannot harm Wile E. in any way. As you can guess, this version of the bird acts completely out-of-character compared to the more lovable incarnation from the Chuck Jones shorts, as he is now shown deliberately putting Wile E. Coyote in harm's way. This pretty much places him along the lines of Herman and Buzzy the Crow, right down to the point where they all fall under the same categories.
- He is shown to be a coward, as he shudders in fear at the sight of Wile E.'s robot in "The Solid Tin Coyote", which is an extremely out-of-character moment for a character like Road Runner who is always shown as being oblivious and unphased to Wile E.'s antics.
- His design in the Larriva shorts is terribly off model and even off-putting, which adds to the overall choppy animation of these shorts.
- The gags are reduced to boring and slow-paced at best, cruel and sadistic at worst.
- Most of the time when he defeats Wile E. by the end of a cartoon, he will perform a victory dance by hopping up and down while laughing "Beep, beep", which further cements his mean streak.
- He never pays his dues for intentionally harming Wile E, nor does he show any remorse for his cruel actions.
- The cartoon "Boulder Wham" features the cat screeching sound effects from Walt Disney's "Cinderella", which proves that this version of Road Runner has the same prejudice against cats that Walt had, unlike the Chuck Jones version.
