Rhymey is one of the main characters in the infamous fanfic series, My Brave Pony: Starfleet Magic.

He is a unicorn who joins the titular Starfleet with the goal of protecting the world and making sure that his friends are safe and happy.

What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]

  • While he is meant to be comic relief for the story, his only gag is his constant rhyming, which he does in conversations, painful grunts, and he even went so far as to have his son named "Buddy Fly" purely because it slightly rhymed with "Fluttershy". Not only do these rhymes do nothing for the story, but they become extremely predictable and annoying to read.
  • He has less characterization than any of the other main characters, as he receives little backstory outside of his family loving rhymes as much as him, barely goes on significant character arcs, and hardly helps his friends with their problems.
  • Despite his ideas that people should be comfortable expressing their ideas, he despises people asking him to stop rhyming, regardless of the context.
  • Although he claims to be a skilled poet and swordsman, he doesn’t show any actual skill in these subjects and even his rhymes are simple and childish.
  • He is neglectful towards Fluttershy after they start dating and he often has her change for him, such as her accent and always rhyming, but never changes himself.
  • Like the rest of the Starfleet, he often abuses his heroic image and performs corrupt actions regularly, such as torturing the prisoners in the jail and bullying people who speak up.
  • Despite his lack of development or characterization, he often receives as much screentime and standalone chapters as Lightning, which often go nowhere.

Trivia[]

  • Ironically, the series author, Mykan, considers Rhymey to be his favorite character due to being one of the first original characters he created for the series.
  • Back when the series was popular, Rhymey was so hated that the phrase "SHUT UP RHYMEY" became a meme for critics.
  • He is one of the few Starfleet Magic Scrappies due to a majority of characters being considered "So Bad It’s Good", with Rhymey being an exception due to his one-note personality and constant screen time.
  • To emphasize his hatedom, one of the series most loved villains, Ace Ray, instantly became loved when he yelled at Rhymey to stop rhyming. Ironically, this was done to insult Rhymey's hatedom.
