~ Pony Head's reaction to discover her best friend had almost died and her family suffered a coup. |
Pony Head is a recurring secondary character in the animated series Star vs. the Forces of Evil. She is a princess from the Cloud Kingdom of Mewni and one of Star Butterfly's best friends.
She was voiced by Jenny Slate.
What Makes Her a Scrappy?[]
In General[]
- In a franchise full of base-breaking main characters, Pony Head stands out as the one main character that hardly any fan admits to like.
- Many fans dislike her out of being extremely self-centered and narcissist (to the point of one episode admitting her crush is herself), constantly making situations important about herself ruining things their friends are trying to do in the process without caring much about that as long as she gets what she wants.
- Her party girl persona mixed with her need of constantly screaming her entire screentime makes her insufferable besides her obvious personality flaws.
- She's very possessive towards Star and constantly treats Marco poorly simply out of being Star's friend in Earth and calling him "Earth Turd", the fact that he seems okay with killing him for Star (and that Star implies this is not the first time she got this possessive) paints a poor image of her.
- While her flaws are sometimes mentioned, she rarely learns from her mistakes and not matter how much Star calls her out she never ditches her out despite how constantly causes her unnecessary problems. Worse, is that the few times she seems to learn a lesson is simply of confirming her own superiority sense.
- She lacks any proper character development and she arguable becomes even worse as the show progresses out of flanderization and the more controversial writing choices.
- Star also constantly justifies her behavior as simply part of her personality and quickly forgives her despite constantly causing her problems.
- A lot of her negative traits are played for laughs but she lacking any positive aspect just makes her detestable rather than anything else,
- She's commonly one of the first to be defeated in the season finales of the latter seasons coming up as useless in battle. Granted is not like fans complain of having less screentime of her.
- The episodes focused on her are commonly the least popular episodes in the series, with Bam Ui Pati! commonly regarded as the worst episode of the entire show for coming up as an annoying filler episode in the middle of the otherwise much more intense second half of the season and the character being at her worst despite being meant to come up as sympathetic.
- Despite her unpopularity, she passed from a character who only appeared in only two episodes in Season 2 to one of the most recurring characters in the series for the rest of the show.
Season 1[]
- In her introductory episode Party With A Pony she threatens to skewer Marco simply for being with them and possibly ruining the night despite him not wanting to go in the first place and once Marco tries to warn Star about it, she tries to push him over the edge of the clouds almost killing him.
- In the same episode, she abandons Marco at his mercy in the arcade letting him get captured by the St. Olga's Reform School for Wayward Princesses guardians, the place considered an living hell in-universe. She lies to Star that Marco is already there and only tries to make it right after Star calls her out.
- You are supposed to feel sympathy for her once she's brainwashed into becoming the perfect princess in St. Olga's Reform School for Wayward Princesses but the fact she was okay with leaving Marco with the guardians in her last appearance makes hard for you to miss her old personality, which Marco even admits.
Season 2[]
- She lies to the group about having tasted a Goblin Dog before which leads them to wait for hours for one out of her wanting one. It doesn't sound that bad but in-universe is a service that can take years of your life to get if we are to trust Roy.
- Is implied to be a bad friend to Kelly, as she let her wait in the line for several hours and seems to believe she died without caring much about it.
- Latin Dub-only example: is implied she didn't even know Kelly could talk
- She makes Marco to play Truth or Punishment with a magic cube (that a later episode reveals is actually extremely dangerous and is often only used in trials) to he reveals his crush on Jackie Lynn Thomas in Sleepover
- She causes nothing but problem for Marco in Pizza Party and only doesn't look like the worst out of Marco suddenly becoming more of a jerk at the last minute of the episode.
- Her stealing of the Dimensional Scissors early on causes Marco to be lost in Hekapoo's dimension for 16 years
Season 3[]
- She appears in almost half of the episodes this time around, having more episodes that many fan-favorites or characters relevant for the plot. It doesn't help she becomes an even bigger jerk and only seems helpful when the other characters are becoming bigger idiots.
- Her first appearance in Scent of a Hoodie
- She mentions casually hearing of the events of The Battle of Mewni (Where Ludo caused a coup against the Butterflies and Star almost died trying to save the situation) and only going once her hair was done (which happened in multiple days and never bothered to contact her) and instead of trying to comfort her over the whole situation she gets annoyed when she notes she's hiding something from her
- In the same episode she doesn't bother to hear Star's issues and simply throws Marco's hoodie to get washed, she's supposed to be in the right because out of pointing out she needs to get over Marco but the fact that he just left that very same day and Star is just recovering from a very traumatic couple of days makes her look inconsiderate towards her friend's feelings. Not even giving her enough time to process all the recent events.
- She also only tries to help Star recover the hoodie once Sir Lavabo proves to be too strict to order for her own taste.
- Upon discovering his ex-boyfriend Seahorse has become a shell of his former self, her only reaction is anger of him not recognizing her rather that his poor state. She also gets back with him in a later episode just so she could help her escape from her sisters and Star and breaks up almost immediately after she decides to stop the plan.
- In Death Peck she almost screws up an advocate for peace and equals rights by stealing part of the Pigeon Kingdom's fortune and kidnapping Rich Pigeon. She also screws up the plan of escape by playing with one of Rich Peagon's fake legs.
- Ponymonium
- She's shown to be incredibly rude and self-centered towards her own family to the point of not caring if one of them went missing and gets angry at Star simply for not hating her sisters instantly despite they have done nothing bad at all yet.
- Is later revealed is was all a ploy to get her sisters to reveal her conspiracy to get her off the throne, Star is understandably angered of being manipulated for her but she quickly forgets it.
- Is also debatable whatever the conspiracy is that bad of an action, considering Pony Head framed someone for her crimes in a later episode, no one was actually killed and they only decide to do it out of all them agreeing Pony Head would not be a good ruler, which is hard to disagree
- A minor one but in Stump Day she argues her poor treatment of Marco make him improve as a person
- Skooled had her attacked by Meteora and losing a horn which left ambiguous whatever she survives the encounter, pretty much everyone in the fandom was disappointed once she turned out okay in the following episode
- Bam Ui Pati! has her at her worst yet. She becomes extremely inconsiderate after Meteora breaks her horn and once Star and her sisters are trying to help her out of worry she runs in to a truck with Seahorse and tries to throw them obstacles (things of the company Seahorse works by the way) in the road so they can't reach her, once Seahorse stops driving because of the storm she knocks him out and drives the van until crashing and in this whole period of events, all she really cares about is finishing her Korean Drama. Making her sadness over losing her horn completely unsympathetic.
- To make matters worse, the lesson she learns is that she's great as she is which is followed by her breaking up with Seahorse again after making her a new horn and accusing Hornanne of always wanting to be the center of attention
Season 4[]
- Once she was asked to create a show with the intention of helping Eclipsa get more beloved by the kingdom of Mewni, she makes the whole thing about herself not letting other guests (including Eclipsa) talk and having the phones of everyone hacked so they can't turn it off or make anything else with them. Which makes the plan backfire making her even more unpopular.
- Opinions are divided whatever her actions in Queen-Napped redeem her a bit or make her worse. She does save the situation to some degree by creating a false kidnapping to create a narrative that makes Eclipssa look more favorable but also never bothers to explain the situation to the rest of the group and makes Star pay the very expensive bills for the hoax, not to mention is still quite an inmoral way to manipulate people's opinions of Eclipsa.
- A latter episode also reveals she got Seahorse as the Scapegoat for the false kidnapping and he's now arrested for her hoax.
- Despite that the destruction of Magic would have logically caused her to die or harm her some way, she's for some unexplained reasons one of the few characters that survive it despite being a floating horse head that would obviously had some magic qualities. This made fans of other magic-based characters like Hekapoo or Spider with a Top Hat be upset she's the one to survive.
- The infamously polarizing final episode has almost a third of his screentime being of conversation between Star and Pony Head regarding discussing the fate of some of the characters, which is not exactly what fans wanted the final minutes of the show to be.
Trivia[]
- Daron Nefcy mentioned in an interview that unlike Alfonzo and Ferguson, she actually loves Pony Head and considers her one of her favorite characters, which would explain her constant appearances and the lack of growth the character has. For many fans, this makes Pony Head far worse as Alfonzo and Ferguson at least faded into the background.
- While unpopular, the creators do seem a bit aware of her unpopularity by giving her a few moments of getting her deserts every once in a while:
- In "St. Olga's Reform School for Wayward Princesses". she briefly loses her old personality to become more fit with St. Olga vision of princesses, Even Marco admits preferring her like this.
- In "Skooled!" she faces Meteora who tear her horn off.
- In "Divide" she's one of the first characters who get her soul sucked by Meteora.
- In "The Ponyhead Show!" she does make an unpopular show which also makes her The Scrappy In-universe probably lampshading her reception with the fanbase. Star also forces her off-stage and shuts her up with a spell which came up as satisfying to many fans.
- In "The Right Way" she's also one of the first characters to fall victim of the Solarian Warriors's swords.
- Averted in the actual ending, where it seemed she would logically die out of the destruction of magic but ended up alright.
