~ Bentley about Penelope's alliance with Le Paradox |
Penelope Mouse, also known as simply Penelope, is a major character in Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves and the overarching antagonist of Sly 4: Thieves In Time.
She was voiced by Annette Toutonghi.
What Makes Her a Scrappy?[]
- The chapter 4 of Sly 4 reveals that she betrayed the Cooper gang by forming an alliance with Cyrille Le Paradox to erase the Cooper family for no other reason for money and jealousy for Sly's influence on Bentley who has limited his "potential".
- She is seen as a complete character assassination of her original self in Sly 3 due to going from a Fair Play girl who was loyal towards the Cooper Gang and did not hesitate to risk her life to save Bentley when he was kidnapped to betraying her close allies including someone who loved her with no signs or foreshadowing that she could have turned like that.
- Her new design has been criticized by many people as it has transitioned from a cute, nerdy, mechanic girls to a sexy, manipulative femme fatale who does not fit with her original personality.
- Fans complain that her petty hatred towards Sly does not make any sense, since not only does she respected him and even had some romantic feelings towards him before her relationship with Bentley, but he was not even in her life anymore when he decided to disband the Cooper Gang to be with Carmelita in his fake amnesia persona when she was with Bentley. Furthermore, the only reason why Bentley decided to contact Sly again was because he noticed the Thievius Raccoonus getting erased meaning that due of her pettiness, she indirectly provoked the reunion of Sly and Bentley and the rebirth of the Cooper Gang.
- Money, which is the other motivation for her betrayal, is completely inconsistent with her original self who didn't care about it, but many of her detractors wonder why she didn't decide to steal the thousands of gold that the Cooper family's vault possesses, knowing that she has access to it when Sly decided to give in to Bentley at the end of Sly 3. Even if we assume that she wanted to gain money by herself instead of relying on the heritage of a thief that she (for no apparent reasons) hates, one wonders why she didn't return to do her dogfighting competition under the disguise of the Black Baron that she loved and in total legality instead of trying to sell weapons and showing Bentley other "possibilities" while allying herself with another thief when she could have done that all by herself.
- Her alliance with Le Paradox makes no sense either, since she only gets some rat guards and nothing more from him. Not only did she show that she was capable of creating powerful robots, but many people also wondered why she didn't decide to erase the Cooper family herself since she has the time machine she has stolen from Bentley instead of relying to someone who is clearly not bright.
- Even though she has no loyalty towards him, she foolishly gave the time machine she stole to Bentley and the plans to use it to Le Paradox which gives him the means to throw her as soon as she is not useful to him or lost to the Cooper Gang; even Bentley chews her for that.
- She stupidly believes that Bentley would agree with her plan to sell weapons after she betrays his love and tried to kill his best friend multiple times.
- Once the Cooper Gang reaches the medieval era, Sly wonders where Penelope is despite nobody having mentioned her except in the intro of the games and to make it even more obvious, when Sir Galleth mentioned the Black Knight who invaded his time period, Penelope's emblem is visible on her armor's torso, making her reveal in chapter 4 completely obvious and predictable.
- After her defeat in chapter 4, she never reappeared again, except only at the end of the game when she is revealed to have escaped the most well-guarded European prison which not only makes her a Karma Houdini, but it also leaves her on a cliffhanger since Sly 5 has yet to be released.
- Even the few people who loved her twist were disappointed that she was only a pawn for Le Paradox and not the main villain. Considering that Le Paradox is also hated for being a weak main villain and responsible for the bad ending after the credits, this outcome could have been slightly better.
- Overall, she is one of two reasons (alongside the post credits scene) of why many people hate Sly 4 and even don't consider it canon to the franchise.
