Orlin Dwyer (also known as Cicada) is the main antagonist of Season 5 of The Flash. After being hit with debris from a satellite that Clifford DeVoe hacked to throw into Central City, he and his niece Grace Gibbons were impacted by it. The satellite left Grace comatose, which led to Orlin attempting to do a crusade to kill every meta-human as revenge after he got powers to control a lightning-shaped dagger made out of the debris that stabbed him.
He is portrayed by Chris Klein.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- While Chris Klein was believable when acting as a normal human and in his interactions with Grace, he never was convincing when he attempted to portray a serial killer with anger. His expressions felt too overacted to the point of completely undermining his seriousness.
- Some of his lines, like "All metas must die" are hard to take seriously.
- Orlin stayed as the season antagonist for too long despite being too one-dimensional and escaped out of situations where he could have been arrested (like in the confontation before the Elseworlds event or when Barry was beating him for paralyzing Nora) due to Team Flash's stupidity rather than genuine skill on his part.
- He lacked a more elaborated plan beyond being a serial killer of meta-humans and had too little depth as a villain in comparison to other major antagonists of the series. While Zoom, Savitar or the Thinker were criticized for their arcs taking too long, Cicada lacked the cool factor, the threatening aura or the scheming these characters had.
- The only depth he had was his care for his niece and otherwise Orlin was left as an unexplored character.
