Nobuyuki Sugou is an antagonist from Sword Art Online.
What Makes Him A Scrappy?[]
- While he is a Hate Sink, most Sword Art Online fans don't simply hate him for that reason.
- Most of his backstory and motivations are never fully explained, with the exception that he took care of Asuna growing up.
- His personality is just bland, basically being a greedy guy who just want to take over the world. Thus, this makes him too cartoonishly evil.
- Every scene with him and Asuna has him metaphorically drooling all over her.
- What's worse is that Asuna was 17 years old at the time and he is in his 20's, making him an ephebophile.
- Also, he turned Asuna from a strong warrior into a damsel in distress. Though Asuna at least almost escaped.
- He is extremely annoying, as everytime he gets beaten by someone. He ends up screaming like a baby.
- His main problem is that he simply he's a gratuitous rapist who doesn't have a purpose beside being edgy. Doesn't help the fact that using rape only for make edgy villains is a common criticism in SAO.
- His design is somewhat uninspired, as he looks more like a rejected Digimon character.
- His dialogue is very cheesy and laughable, such as "The total control of the human soul! The power of a god! It's so close I can almost taste it!"
- Tying massively into the edgy nature of him as a villain, during one later scene before the final battle, after pinning Kirito, he proceeds to abuse Asuna and even straight up licks her tears out of pure sadism.
- His defeat is very unsatisfying and pretty nonsensical, as, despite his rage, Kirito never fully kills Sugou, which would be vastly warranted for the horrific deeds he committed, not to mention Sugou could have died from hypothermia since Kirito left him unconscious with a cut in the neck in the hospital parking lot during snowing.
Trivia[]
- He is ranked #10 on Anime Planet for most hated anime character.
- His video game canon counterpart in Infinity Moment and Hollow Fragment is not a Scrappy as they toned down his cartoonish evilness, he is an active villain, and the rape implications were just covered offscreen. Although "Oberon" returns in Accel World vs Sword Art Online as the same leecherous creep who thinks he's entitled to have Asuna, like in the anime canon, he's an AI NPC and not the actual Sugou. But fortunately, Asuna is not a damsel in distress unlike in the anime Fairy Dance Arc, and there's the option to kill him.
