Nikki and Paulo are minor supporting characters who suddenly appear in Season 3 of the show Lost. They are petty criminals who murder an old man for his money, and are then stranded on a mysterious island with the other survivors following a plane crash.
They were played by Kiele Sanchez and Rodrigo Santoro.
What Makes Them Scrappies?[]
- They are abruptly introduced in Season 3 with no explanation of who they are and are treated by the rest of the cast like they were there the whole time. The show's writers admitted this was a mistake as it made the audience hate them before they even opened their mouths.
- They're both dimwitted and self-absorbed, usually contributing little to the group and talking down to the other survivors. Paulo often belittles the other survivors and spends most of his time golfing, but complains about not being included more in the group, while Nikki only seems to care about the diamonds, even manipulating Paulo to get them back.
- They insist on joining a mission to the Pearl station, and though Nikki is able to point out something helpful, this is only because the main characters, who are normally very competent, uncharacteristically fail to notice it, making it clear this was only done to make her look better. Paulo contributes nothing to the scene other than making sarcastic remarks and startles the others when he uses the restroom off-camera, which was mocked by reviewers who named his character "Take a Sh-t Guy."
- Their final episode reveals that both are criminals who poisoned a rich old man to get $8 million worth of diamonds and even joked about his death. It's also revealed that everything they've done was self-serving as they just wanted to find the diamonds, and it's even shown they were aware of some threats the survivors faced earlier and didn't bother to warn them.
- They betray each other in their greed for the diamonds, which leads to their death as they're paralyzed by a poisonous spider and mistakenly buried alive.
Trivia[]
- According to the writers, Paulo was deliberately written to be unlikable at first but was meant to redeem himself later, but this didn't work as he wasn't given enough depth.
- The writers quickly decided to kill them off halfway through the season due to their unpopularity. Their fate is ironically lampshaded when Nikki stars in an in-universe TV show and is killed off, and she states "I'm a guest star, Paulo. We all know what happens to guest stars."
