~ The show attempting to overshadow Monty's actions with Mr. de la Cruz's words. |
Mr. de la Cruz is a minor antagonist of the Netflix original TV series 13 Reasons Why, serving as a personal antagonist in Season 3 for his son, Monty de la Cruz. While rarely seen, the few appearances he does make are always dedicated to him committing some act of aggression.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- Despite his Hate Sink status, he is far too underdeveloped and bog standard by the show's criteria to be an effective one.
- He is an extremely flat character that has zero motivation behind his actions, not even doing it for the Evulz.
- His entire personality lacks any positive emotions (not even selfish ones) and only consists of two negative traits, those being abusive and homophobic, while also lacking other negative emotions and traits.
- Similar to Estela and Diego, his character was created in later seasons only to give depth to Monty. This made more obvious because unlike the other two, every minute of his minimal screen time is dedicated to him making homophobic jabs or abusing his son.
- The show tries to scapegoat Mr. de la Cruz in order to give Monty a Freudian excuse for the latter’s horrible behavior, but fails to do so properly:
- Monty is far too detestable of a character to sympathize with, and he easily outclasses his father in the show's heinous standards, so any attempt made to excuse Monty by comparing him to his father does not hold.
- This is made even worse by the fact most of Mr. de la Cruz's crimes are told and offscreen, unlike Monty's which are graphically shown.
- Mr. de la Cruz is shown to have no important role in Monty's life, and he isn’t mentioned until the season 2 finale, only minutes before Monty’s infamous rape scene. By the time he does make his first appearance in season 3, it’s after Monty has already committed his worst crimes.
- Despite the show’s intentions to blame him for Monty’s evilness, none of the other protagonists ever acknowledge Mr. de la Cruz's existence, which diminishes the show’s attempt to excuse Montgomery.
- The show ultimately fails at holding him accountable for Monty’s evil and escapes unpunished and is never mentioned again after Monty’s death.
- He also never even reacted to his son's demise at all, deciding to instead divorce his wife, disown his daughter, and leave at his own will afterwards, and all of these were not only offscreen, but also not even mentioned at all, making him even more flat.
- It's also implied that the rest of his family never even acknowledged his existence, either, which may explain why he left them.
