Mr. Caraway is a major protagonist in the animated series, High Guardian Spice.
He is a teacher at Guardian Academy and the childhood best friend of Lavender (who is actually working for the Triumvirate), the mother of the main protagonist, Rosemary.
He was voiced by series creator Raye Rodriguez.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- He is voiced by the creator of the show and is designed after him, which implies that he is more of a self-insert rather than a genuine character for the audience.
- His talk with Rosemary was criticized for being too ham-fisted when talking about Caraway's gender identity, causing the dialogue to appear unnatural and it was also criticized for drawing too many parallels to real life practices for a fantasy setting. Transgender viewers also criticized Caraway's talks for lacking in the sincerity of a person’s gender identity.
- Raye Rodriguez does a poor job voicing him and the audio quality doesn’t help.
- While not as bad as the other teachers, he still inadvertently endangers his students and doesn’t train them any protocols for the life-threatening things the kids in the academy do, such as handling weapons and acid spitting plants.
- He doesn’t do very much for the main plot and mainly just stands in the background. Notably, in the final episode, he is defeated immediately by Mandrake, despite being a trained guardian.
- He is meant to come off as a wise man who wants what’s best for his students, he really only fills this role once and all his other appearances are mainly used for pandering.
- Overall, Caraway has been criticized by critics and audiences for being a poorly executed attempt at transgender representation, especially considering Snapdragon from the same show was more positively received for her arc of coming out as transgender (which is saying a lot because her arc also had its share of criticisms due to unfortunate implications).
