NOTE: This page will only focus on the titular Dick Birchum from the 2024 Mr. Birchum television series, as the original and other adaptions aren't considered scrappies, thus only information on the 2024 Mr. Birchum version should be put here. |
Richard "Dick" Birchum is the titular protagonist of Dailywire’s Mr. Birchum.
He was voiced by Adam Carolla.
What Makes Him A Scrappy?[]
- He's supposed to be a sane man among a loony cast, but he comes across as a jerk instead. Most viewers think Mr. Karponzi is the one to root for in their conflicts since Birchum does several wrong things that Karponzi has every right to call out, like forcing his students to do free labor and leaving them unsupervised in a place with dangerous tools.
- He is essentially flanderized from Crank Yankers and the original pilot. Rather than being a bumbling yet polite man who was always confused by occurrences in his life, he is now an ill-tempered and stubborn man who is always in the right even when the audience thinks he’s clearly in the wrong.
- He doesn’t show actual respect towards his family and always belittles them for minor and outright hypocritical reasons,
- Viewers don’t like that he’s a mouthpiece for the authors to complain about society and express their political and narrow-minded thoughts, with everything he says being portrayed as right while everyone who understandably criticizes him is portrayed as a jerk, with everyone else agreeing with him.
- An example of this, the series portrays him as being in the right for calling out his son for making a living making video games, but making a living making video games is a perfectly legal way to make money and most would feel it’s nothing to be ashamed of, with the only reasons for Birchum not liking this is due to it no conforming to his (and by extension, The Daily Wire’s) old-fashioned views on work.
Trivia[]
- He has been compared to HBO Velma, who is an infamous Scrappy as well.
- He also been negatively compared to Hank Hill, who is not a Scrappy as the show does call him out for his actions when he does something bad and doesn’t portray him in being in the right.
- His original counterpart from Crank Yankers is not considered a scrappy due to having more comedic moments and fans.
- Ironically, his nemesis Mr. Karponzi is considered to be much more likeable for seemingly being the only one willing to take action when Mr. Birchum does something bad.
