~ Merraid Oarburgh trying to appear affably, despite literally being Near Pure Evil. |
Merraid Oarburgh is the secondary antagonist of the prequel manga series Akame Ga Kill! Zero.
She is an assassin and the leader of the Oarburgh Clan. She goes around trying to make all girls see "the light" by molesting and raping them, eventually converting them into lesbians.
What Makes Her a Scrappy?[]
- Her writing tries to copy what works with Esdeath (who in herself already divides opinions), being a femme fatale fighter villain with a mad love for the protagonist and even having two covers, but it fails miserably due to her flat personality and total lack of charisma.
- Her personality is completely shallow and disgusting, consisting only of being a rapist and an ephebophile who harasses and molests girls just for the sake of it, and is never criticized for it.
- When rape was first shown in the franchise, it was by the Wild Hunt, whose actions involving it were depraved as they raped their victims to death, including Bols' wife and daughter, which were rightly seen as monstrous injustices to be avenged - marking them as more vile than the mostly villainous but more honorable Jaegers, and sex in general does not play a major role in the series. So, characters like Syura and Champ were made to be despicable. Then, the prequel introduces Merraid. She is a serial rapist, too, but in her case, it is played as Black Comedy and she is seen as a quirky individual who Akame eventually respects, despite being abused by her.
- This is also very hypocritical since female rapists or sexual offenders such as Cosmina, Suzuka, and Dorothea existed, and their actions were never shown for comedy. Even Esdeath's kiss and comedic fan service moments with Tatsumi were portrayed as creepy due to their age difference.
- Has an intense hatred for men despite never having received abuse from them, and while she tolerated her butler, she never cared for him contrary to her female members simply because he was a man.
- She is a heterophobe who tries to break up any straight couple she encounters and make the girl see "the light", with all of them taking pleasure in Merraid's rape.
- She is a terrible representation of a lesbian and a perfect representation of the "double standard rape between a female and male" that many people hate.
- This is especially odd since Akame Ga Kill does have a decently represented gay character in the form of Bulat.
- The narrative tries to make her seem like a complex or morally ambiguous character when; in reality, she is incredibly flat and no better than Honest (but at least Honest was pretty funny at times), Syura, Champ or other villains in the franchise.
- She says she hates the Empire because they lie to their lackeys, but this is completely hypocritical, seeing as she lies to Akame and Kurome about Natala's well-being while keeping him tortured.
- She has the important role of revealing to Akame the corruption behind the empire which many people see as a retcon due to it being Najenda who originally did that in the source material.
- Her abuse of Chelsea was played for laughs or Black Comedy, despite how sexual crimes were handled in the source material.
- She tricks Akame into giving Kurome's medicine to her mouth-to-mouth, resulting in an incestuous kiss, which she did out of pure sick pleasure.
- Akame respects her as a worthy opponent despite everything she has been put through at her hands, leaving readers enraged.
- Despite everything she did, Akame grants her one last wish, which is seeing her naked body; not only is this a very out-of-character thing for Akame to do, but also a very shameful and undeserved wish to grant someone who has molested and even tried to rape her.
- Even though a few people like her, that is solely and exclusively because of her attractive design, which even then is nothing special for female characters in the manga.
- Even Takahiro comments that the only reason he likes her and the other Oarburghs is because he can do fan-service scenes with them, such scenes that are the reason why readers hate them in the first place.
- Even Akame Ga Kill: Zero's biggest fans largely despise her as a character.
Trivia[]
- She, Prime Minister Honest and General Budo are the only Scrappies in Akame Ga Kill.
