Melisandre, also known as The Red Woman, is a major character in the television series Game of Thrones, an adaptation of the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series.
She is a Red Priestess, devoted to the religion of R'hllor, the Lord of Light, and serves as a close counselor and mistress to Stannis Baratheon and later a counselor to Jon Snow.
She was portrayed by Carice van Houten.
What Makes Her a Scrappy?[]
- Melisandre's character seemed grim from the very first moment as she begins to corrupt Stannis' heart more and more. This culminated in her convincing him to sacrifice his daughter to the Lord of Light, which she does herself and a moment later runs away, leaving Stannis to his fate.
- She conducts a leech ceremony to kill the 3 kings who are rivals to Stannis: Robb, Joffrey and Balon. The three die suddenly a few episodes later and Stannis claims it has something to do with her power, although most fans see it as just a disturbing and harmless ritual.
- Throughout her support of Stannis she confronts Ser Davos Seaworth and then in the last episode of season 5 (episode after Shireen's sacrifice) she and Davos reunite at Castle Black, seemingly as friends.
- In the next episode, a scene revealing Melisandre's old form is presented and disturbed many audiences and is considered one of the most notorious scenes in the series, especially since her appearance as an old woman is presented by the actress of the younger show, Carice van Houten, who dressed her for the scene.
- In season 6 she brings Jon Snow back to life. However, just before that, she opposes the idea of the return and claims that she does not have the tools for it.
- It's even weirder that before the battle of the bastards she tells Jon that she'll bring him back again if he's killed in battle, even against his resistance. Allegedly because the Lord of Light wanted him, but she did the deed regardless of the Lord of Light but at the request of Debus.
- Even before she brings Jon back to life, she is disturbingly interested in him, offers him to touch her breast (even though he has pledged not to marry a woman and is also troubled by Ygritte's death) and finally shows him that she knows who he fell in love with: "You know nothing Jon Snow".
- In seasons 6 to 8 she becomes a hero, but this causes her to lose the impact she had on the show like when she supported Stannis (apart from bringing Jon back to life). She also suddenly changes her opinions, for example claiming that Shireen's sacrifice was important and a few episodes later calling it a "terrible mistake".
- She also claims in season 7 that her goal was: "To unite fire and ice", although her contribution to this was very small.
- According to the creators, the meeting between her and Arya, in which she saw that the latter would close many eyes, gave rise to the scene in which Arya kills the Night King - something that disappointed many fans.
- Eventually she kills herself for an unknown reason by removing her choker and turning into an old woman. However, she had already removed her choker before that without anything happening to her, which makes her death even more strange.
- In the end even though her character is meant to advance the plot, she becomes too weird, and nearly nothing is known about her real self and her religion's beliefs (unlike the books), leaving the plot with too many holes.
