Megamind is the titular main protagonist of the streaming film Megamind vs. the Doom Syndicate and its TV series continuation Megamind Rules!, sequels to the DreamWorks original 2010 film Megamind.
He is voiced by Keith Ferguson.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- Fans of the original movie do not like Keith Furguson replacing Will Ferrell as Megamind. While Keith previously did a great job replicating Will's voice in the Megamind tie-in video game his impression is noticeably much worse in the sequel. Though this is forgivable as this is Keith's first time voicing the character in over ten years. And Will Ferrell was voicing Maxime Le Mal in Despicable Me 4 at the time.
- The primary criticism regarding Megamind in the sequels is how his development from the previous movie is completely undone, as he continues to behave like a unlikable jerk towards Minion (now known as Ol' Chum) for no reason, and has another dramatic separation from him despite them already having one in the first movie. Up until the second half of Rules, Megamind and Roxanne aren't treated like an official couple, even though that was the crux of his character arc in the first movie.
- To make matters worse, Megamind also seems to have a narcissistic attitude as he infamously states that himself is "one of his favorite things in the whole wide world," and tells Metro City how lucky they are to have him as a hero, something his original self in the first film definitely wouldn't do. This received many criticisms from fans of the first movie.
- Despite Alan Schoolcraft and Brent Simmons returning to write Doom Syndicate and certain episodes of Rules, Megamind's jokes are noticeably very unfunny and nearly always fail to land, often feeling like worser versions of jokes from the first film. The biggest criticism of the jokes are that they rely too hard on Megamind's ego, unlike the first film where his humour relied more on his flamboyance, intelligence and awkward moments.
- Despite being a genius (if the name didn't tip that off), Megamind is noticeably much more dimwitted and stupid in the follow-ups. The most notable examples of this are him using the De-Gun's Dehydration mode on the Go-Fish Gang but not the Doom Syndicate (given they aren't stated to be immune to its effects) and disguising himself with makeup instead of his disguise watch. It has gotten to a point where Schaffrillas Productions's quote from his review of Doom Syndicate and the first-half of Rules, "SHOOT THEM WITH THE DEHYDRATION GUN!" has become an online meme.
- As an example of how stupid Megamind became in the sequels, he needed to call Roxanne for assistance on using a toaster.
- Many fans don't like how most of his backstory as a villain is retconned, as not only is he established to've allied with the Doom Syndicate, but as well as being Machiavillain's apprentice. This obviously makes no sense to those who've watched the first movie, as not only is Minion stated to be the only friend Megamind had his whole life before turning good, but the first movie shows that Megamind was raised and originally educated in the prison he landed in as a baby, as well as later going to school with the heavy implication that he and Metro Man were the only supers in Metro City.
- This point of the film has been heavily criticised, with fans feeling the sequel misses the point of the original as a parody of the superhero genre, with both Megamind and Metro Man being forced into roles they had to fill in a world without supers and not being happy with it. The sequel instead tries to be a normal superhero movie.
- Like the rest of the series, he is very poorly animated and his design looks creepy and ugly to look at.
Trivia[]
- He is one of four Megamind characters to be Scrappies alongside the Mayor of Metro City, Keiko Morita, and Dude Monkey (all of which are from the sequel with the exception of the latter).
- The Megamind sequels were so hated, an entire subreddit about hating on them was made.
- Despite being extremely hated in his outing in the sequel, and the first half of Season 1 of the series not helping matters, the second half of Season 1 is considered to be an improvement by many, even Schaffrillas Production. Megamind in the second-half received praise for being heavily improved upon from Doom Syndicate and the first half of Season 1, as he comes off as less idiotic, has more funny jokes and is now much more likeable and in-line with his original character in the first movie. Plus, his romance with Roxanne is much more developed on. While obviously not praised on the same level as the first movie, some have come around to this version of Megamind for Season 1's second-half improving on his character.
