Our time as the dominant species of the planet will replace that of the Homo Sapien. It's scientific fact. It is happening. And a war has begun over this.
~ Magneto wanting to make mutants the new dominant species on Earth by replacing humans.
I'm not a cruel man, you understand. It's been years since I've even tasted flesh, human or otherwise.
~ Magneto's infamous quote of implying that he is a cannibal.

Magneto is a major antagonist within the Ultimate Marvel universe comic continuity. He serves as the main antagonist of Ultimate X-Men and Ultimatum but is portrayed much differently from his mainstream counterpart. In this universe, he is less of an anti-villain but more so a genocidal terrorist, who seeks humanity's extinction.

What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]

  • Everything about this version of Magneto is considered as a massive downgrade of the original character. In the Ultimate universe, he is written to always be at his worst with his goals not being so well-intentioned, unlike his complex mainstream counterpart.
  • He varies a lot from his mainstream counterpart to the worst degree:
    • He is no longer a sympathetic Holocaust survivor, who wanted to protect mutantkind from humanity because he genuinely felt humans seek to destroy his people, which reminds him of his trauma. Instead, he is portrayed as a genocidal supremacist who seeks to destroy all of humanity because he simply believes mutants are the master race with no tragedy or reason behind it, making him poorly written as a byproduct.
    • His relationship with his children is horrendous as he treats them very badly for no reason. He hates his son, Pietro, so much he calls him "effeminate", making him a homophobe, and it's revealed that he is a misogynist as well since he called Polaris, his daughter, a "harlot."
      • To make things even worse, Magneto tried to kill Pietro several times and berate or insult him on every occasion. He even went so far to ask Cyclops to call him "father" every time Pietro is present between them.
    • Unlike his relationship with Charles Xavier in the original continuity, Magneto and Xavier don't have that deep of a friendship with Magneto willing to kill him without a second thought all because Charles compared him to some of the most infamous dictators in history.
  • Magneto unleashing Ultimatum makes zero sense because he plans to flood the earth by using the magnetic poles on the planet. That's not how floods work, as they happen when the land is normally dry for the water to overflow it. Changing the magnetic poles have no impact on the earth's axis to cause such a disastrous event.
  • His actions rely very heavily on shock value due to how ridiculous and absurd they are. His most infamous moment in the comics is where he claims of eating human flesh, implying that Magneto participates in cannibalism as to show his strong distain for humans. Even worse, he claims that he wants to make humans as living livestock for the mutant race.
  • In his last moments of realizing that mutants were genetic experiments made by S.H.I.E.L.D, he suddenly regrets his actions and believes that Charles would forgive him. This doesn't make any sense considering that Xavier told Magneto that he will be hunted down and then compared him to evil dictators, which prompted Magneto into killing him. Given the actions he took for mutant supremacy, it does not make sense that Magneto would think that Xavier would forgive him.
  • Overall, this version of Magneto represents the many problems that fans had with the Ultimate Marvel universe.

Trivia[]

  • Some of Ultimate Magneto's traits has been used as inspiration for the one in the 20th Century Fox movies, mainly his willingness to commit genocide against mankind. Ironically, his 20th Century Fox version is a loved character due to his complexity and tragic backstory, which is similar to his mainstream counterpart.
  • Had he not shown slight remorse for his actions, Magneto would've been qualified as Pure Evil and be the first ever incarnation of the character to be one.
  • It is likely he is an unintentional Near Pure Evil, as he showed remorse in his final moments after he realized the truth about mutants, believing Charles would forgive him. However, his remorse was half-baked and is only a minor prevention.
