“ | L.R.H.: For centuries, we Atlanteans spent, nay, wasted our talents and energy building the most sophisticated weaponry to defend ourselves from invaders. But we abandoned the idea of warfare long ago and now all these weapons gather dust behind this locked door as an example of what must be done if one wishes to live in harmony with all creatures of this, or any, world. Mr. Krabs: [sighs] Eh, harmony, schmarmony. When do we get to see the treasure?! |
„ |
~ Thank you, Mr. Krabs. Otherwise he would talk for further centuries… |
“ | L.R.H.:Look! A talking speck! This talking speck will make a fantastic replacement for our recently deflated national treasure! Won't you little fella? Plankton: I'll destroy all of you-- L.R.H.: Amazing! This is so much better than that dusty old bubble! |
„ |
~ So much for your people's most beloved and treasured ancient relic. |
Lord Royal Highness or L.R.H. is major character in the infamous SpongeBob SquarePants special Atlantis SquarePantis. He’s the Emperor of the long lost Kingdom of Atlantis. In this episode it’s revealed that Atlantis isn’t a lost island like in the original legend but a city of alien people with an antic relic which is the oldest Soap bubble of the world. Although presented mostly as sympathetic, he ends up being one of the two main antagonists (alongside Plankton) of the episode after Patrick popped the bubble.
He was voiced by the late English musician David Bowie.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- For his detractors, he's wasted potential.
- This episode is infamous for its density of songs: All six main characters has a part in the Outward journey song, (except for SpongeBob and Patrick) an own song and (except for Plankton) a part in the ending song. Some of them are really unpopular, especially Sandys and Planktons songs, but then they have a new special character for this episode, voiced by an actual professional singer David Bowie but they didn’t give him any song. Even when David Bowie did a decent job, this pick is still considered as wasted.
- In this story the Atlanteans aren’t a lost kingdom but an alien population, normally an interesting idea, but LRH never told anything of his own background. He basically has no own story.
- While he doesn’t have a real background story, he doesn’t have an own personality either, because he’s inconsistently written.
- There are some moments meant to be funny, portraying him as clumsy and humorous, but they aren’t funny because this behavior is completely out of character. Mostly he comes across as a polite, competent and serious tour guide.
- While he always emphasizes how important knowledge is for Atlanteans and indirectly says how intelligent he is, in the end he doesn’t even know what Plankton is and thinks he’s a talking speck.
- For fans he has an unbearable number of moments, where he just talks about something of the history of Atlantis. Information’s which are completely irrelevant for the story but what’s much worse for fans is that these moments are lazy designed, which showed only L.R.H. talking, without any Flashbacks or interesting action in the background. This episode is already infamous enough for its length, but these moments are considered as really boring.
- Like all the other Atlanteans his appearance is considered as really uncanny because his brain is in some kind of glass ampoule, and he has double the size of the soldiers of his army which just letting them look really embarrassing.
- He is considered as pretty incompetent and completely unfit as a king, e.g. for building advanced technology but having a guard equipped with middle-age weapons or showing SpongeBob and Patrick the most precious relict, they have from their home planet after they already popped the copy bubble.
- That Patrick popped both bubbles is of course dumb enough but that this bubble didn’t pop before is also considered as inconsistently writing because all the other Atlanteans also have the flashlight cameras which ultimately popped the bubbles. Also L.R.H. said, that this bubble is his people's most beloved and treasured ancient relic. So maybe the risk was known and L.R.H. could’ve warned SpongeBob and Patrick or it’s just inconsistently writing.
- After the relic popped L.R.H. made the switch to the angry vengeful king, wanting to execute the whole main cast.
- Not only is this again completely out of character but it also made him unintentionally unsympathetic because Squidward and Sandy made nothing wrong and Mr. Krabs taking some of the treasure was openly allowed by L.R.H. himself. He's just right to be mad at Patrick, as even SpongeBob couldn’t see that Patrick suddenly takes a new photo.
- Also after he sees Plankton, he suddenly snaps out of it again, being exactly like before and even insults the “dusty old bubble” although he just wanted to kill the heroes for popping it.
- In the end he’s letting throwing away the amulet so Atlantis doesn’t get any tourists anymore, despite everything was alright until he let Patrick destroy the relic out of his own imprudence.
- All in all he’s one of the main reasons that this episode is so unpopular, because he makes the episode feelingly even longer with his boring speeches but on the same time his not existing story and his inconsistently writing seems to rush too much. Also, instead of 20 songs, which are all mediocre at best, let David Bowie sing only one song and this whole episode would having a much better reception. But the way they did it, Atlantis SquarePantis will always be remembered as one of the most infamous episodes, especially special episodes, SpongeBob ever had.
Trivia[]
- He’s the fourth SpongeBob SquarePants character to be a Scrappy, after Narlene, Mrs. Wormsley and Frederick T. Nitpick,
