Light Turner is the main protagonist of the 2017 Netflix film adaptation of Death Note. He is a teenager whose life is changed when he finds the titular object.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- He diverges from the original Light Yagami in many ways to the point where many people see him as an insult to the original character in the manga/anime:
- The premise of Light Yagami was a character having everything and still feeling bored, while Light Turner being a victim of bullies in the school and has family issues, which the fans think ruined the point.
- He's a good person who only gets manipulated in villainy while Yagami was a Not-So-Well-Intentioned-Extremist with a god complex.
- He is seen as too emotive and childish, as he was extremely frightened by Ryuk, saddened by his mother's death and makes goofy faces during the ball. The original Light Yagami was liked due to being much more calm and charismatic.
- He felt remorse in the end. Meanwhile in the manga, he died without any sense of guilt, and even in the anime (where his death is portrayed in a debatably sympathetic way) his remorse is at most implied (and hinted to be regret at finding the Death Note rather than remorse for the people he killed).
- He confessed Mia about the Death Note and later fell for her lies too badly, reuniting with her when she affirmed to love him despite wanting to kill his father some minutes ago. This made viewers accuse him of being an idiot and simp, and turning the Death Note in a tool to pick up girls.
- Many didn’t like the fact that Light Yagami's surname was changed to Turner and found it senseless.
- While he ends up manipulating the Death Note to kill Mia if she takes the book while surviving and brainwashing criminals into killing law enforcement to clear his name, this didn’t redeem him to the eyes of viewers as they think he didn’t really need to do that because L is the only person after her and he could simply write Mia's name in the book instead of masterminding his plan.
