"Major Spoilers Ahead!" |
Kyohei Jingu is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Akira Nishikiyama) of Yakuza 1 and its remake, Yakuza Kiwami.
He is a corrupt politician who leads the MIA (Ministry Intelligence Agency) who attempts to rule Japan by interfering with yakuza business, initially teaming up with the Nishikiyama family to help with this goal, he would later betray both the Nishikiyama family and Tojo Clan by selling them out to the Omi Alliance.
He is voiced by Hiroaki Yoshida in the Japanese dub and Robin Atkin Downes in the English Dub of the original 2005 Yakuza.
What makes him a Scrappy?[]
- Although he is intended to be written as a Hate Sink, he wasn't disliked by many fans for that reason rather because said fans considered him a poorly written main antagonist compared to Nishikiyama with many finding his motive, that being to conquer Japan and its criminal underworld so moronic to the point where he is considered laughable evil in a bad way.
- It also doesn't help the fact that Nishikiyama has been given more characterization at this point during Kiwami's release—due to his benevolent role as a major supporting character/ally in Yakuza 0 and the additional scenes in Kiwami that explained his motivation for being the cold and ruthless crime boss that Kiryu encounters in the main story that has fans find the former's Start of Darkness as being both interesting and tragic as opposed to Jingu's characterization of still being a power-hungry corrupt politician that came out of nowhere.
- Perhaps the most infamous thing about Jingu that players hated was his extremely difficult boss fight as players have to first deal with his solders and two bodyguards that would occasionally shoot Kiryu with each shot downing him and melting his health fast. Jingu would run away from you and leave you open to his soldiers all the while firing shots at Kiryu. If the two bodyguards were downed first, they'll shortly regain consciousness and fight you again at full health, it doesn't help the fact that the two bodyguards would be very evasive and hard to counter.
- The fight in Kiwami would make the fight even more difficult, as Jingu now gains the ability to throw explosives at Kiryu which can be hard to predict, and getting hit by those explosives takes off a huge chunk of health (depending on what difficulty is currently selected) and knocks Kiryu on the ground. All of this would cause the players to feel rage and the Jingu fight would be rightfully considered to be the worst fight in the series. Which makes it satisfying for players to either see Jingu getting beaten up with no damage being dealt to Kiryu or getting a heat action performed on him.
- In fact, the entire Yakuza community all collectively agree that Jingu's fight was the worst boss fight in the series to the point where a mod was made to include an option to skip the entire Jingu fight just by pressing the button input that's on the screen.
- Overall, while the writers intended to have Jingu be a Hate Sink, most fans hated him not only because of his actions in the story but for unrelated reasons such as his extremely difficult boss that is considered to be the worst fight in the series and being considered poorly written compared to Nishikiyama who at this point has a lot of characterization thanks to Yakuza 0 and his added scenes in Kiwami.
