~ Kronika

Kronika, also known as Lady Kronika and the Keeper of Time, is one of the overarching antagonists of the Mortal Kombat franchise.

She is an immensely powerful divine entity,a titaness with the power of time at her disposal, she seeks to remake the universe through a new era, ending Raiden and anyone who opposes her.

She is voiced by Jennifer Hale.

What Makes Her a Scrappy?[]

  • She appears literally out of nowhere in the already complicated Mortal Kombat story, with no indication of her existence unlike other villains such as: Shao Kahn, Shinnok, Onaga, even Blaze who at least had a mention, however Kronika only appears in the eleventh game in the franchise and is not mentioned before any other event.
  • Her appearance (and by extension the titans), also brought with it inconsistencies in the power scale, she appears as the most powerful threat; however, she leaves aside Onaga, One Being, and Blaze (even Ed Boon had said that Blaze was the most powerful character in Mortal Kombat).
  • Her power is also quite inconsistent; having the power of time, she could have ended everything, going back just a few moments, however for some reason, she needs a crown infused in Shang Tsung's well of souls, to reach her maximum potential.
  • Her design is awful and makes her look ridiculous rather then intimidating.
  • She barely does anything in the story, since she leaves everything to her allies, and doesn't show why she is such a big threat, until the end of the game.
  • It feels like a highly unnecessary retcon, it is revealed that it was behind every timeline in the saga, which also downplays the threat that was the One Being, or Raiden and Liu Kang's fight, which also stops be such a big plot weight, and that also opens up many questions:
    • According to her, Raiden has interfered with her plans in every timeline, unbalancing good and evil, but what exactly does she mean? Since Shinnok, who is supposedly the 'Evil', had the intention of awakening the One Being, which would devour the other ancient gods including Cetrion (who would be the 'Good') and would also bring 'imbalance' so to speak, so it's understandable why Raiden and the Earthrealmers stopped him.
    • This gets worse if we consider the first timeline (which we assume is also the original) everything ends in Armageddon, which causes a fight of all against all since the combatants were becoming too powerful to be handled by the kingdoms. which effectively causes the end of reality, now where was she to fix everything? As far as we know, Armageddon is a much more cataclysmic event than the balance of good and evil, this also makes it understandable that Raiden tries to avoid all of this.
    • It also doesn't help that for some reason he blames Raiden, since every bad event that happens is the fault of villains like Shao Kahn, Shang Tsung, his son Shinnok and Onaga.
    • Even if he took the side of the villains, it is not justification to put all the blame on Raiden, for example Shujinko, protagonist of MK deception, made a much bigger mistake than Raiden, by being deceived by Onaga and indirectly helping him in his plans.
  • Basically, she exists as an excuse to reboot the franchise again.
  • Makes highly questionable decisions in the story, such as when by bringing in characters from the past, she also brings in past versions of the heroes for some reason, which gives them a chance to even things out, or the fact that she hasn't brought in more powerful villains to help her (Like the aforementioned Onaga, and/or her son Shinnok), and recruit Jax, knowing that sooner or later he may turn against her.
  • In the Aftermath expansion, the role of main antagonist is relegated to Shang Tsung, even in this expansion she is less present than in the main story.
  • She is defeated very easily by Shang Tsung making her look quite weak, despite being one of MK's biggest threats.
    • In Mortal Kombat 1, Kronika, who appears as "Damashi" and is voiced by Jennifer Hale, is actually a disguise of Shang Tsung to give a new era Shang Tsung's path to villainy, only to betray him once he served his army. That means Kronika still being killed off for real.
  • In general, she is a generic villain, with generic and stupid plans, not even her boss battle is salvageable, since many Mortal Kombat fans talk about how very difficult it is to fight her especially in any difficultly.

Trivia[]

  • Kronika and Cetrion are both scrappies originated from Mortal Kombat 11.
  • Arguably, Kronika is Netherrealm's answer to DC Comics' Perpetua for being a "Hegemonical ultimate evil" type villain, in addition for her cataclysmic plans and flat personality.
