My love for shining gold is such that I could never have too much! I wish that everything I touch would turn to gold, gold, gold!
~ King Midas

King Midas is the king from Greek mythology who was given the "gift" of having everything he touched to turn to gold. His story was adapted by Disney and made only one animated appearance in the poorly received 1935's The Golden Touch.

He was voiced by the late Billy Bletcher.

What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]

  • One of the major reasons why the short film was such a failure back in its day was because of how unappealing of a character this version of King Midas was. In all of his screentime, he was shown to be a greedy jerk that was far too unsympathetic for audiences to root for and too one-dimensional to be an amusing villain protagonist, which translates in a character that simply did not appeal to anyone in the audience and didn't work as protagonist, not even in a short film.
  • The very first thing he does once he obtains the Golden Touch is turn his own cat into gold, which needless to say isn't really funny and only make viewers root harder against him. Even worse is the fate of the cat never being clarified by the end of the short even with Goldie taking the curse away.
  • Unlike other versions of the myth, where King Midas is a more complex character and expresses regret once he accidently turns her own daughter into gold, this version doesn't interact with anyone else and the only reason he wants to get rid of the Golden touch is because he's unable to eat now, something that obviously is only an issue towards himself.
  • He also spends the first two minutes of the short film simply singing about his greed which a lot of viewers felt was boring padding.
  • The reception towards the character and the short was so poor that it actually made Walt Disney decide to never direct another short film again, making him decide to not direct what would have been his first feature film Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and remain a producer for the rest of his life.
