Kazuo Tengan is the main antagonist of the anime Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School.

He is the former headmaster and advisor of Hope’s Peak Academy and the founder and chairman of the future foundation. Somewhen in the war against the Ultimate Despair, he was brainwashed to becoming one of Junko Enoshima’s moles and after this he plans to bring hope and wiping out despair by using Ryota Mitarai’s Hope Video to brainwash all of humanity into only able to feel hope instead of any other emotions.

He was voiced by Hidekatsu Shibata in the original Japanese version, and Mark Stoddard in the English dub.

What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]

  • He is a dull and completely unenjoyable last minute twist villain whose reveal came much too late to have any kind of impact on the story, with his villainous role only being revealed once he’s already dead. Meaning even if some of the audience got surprised by this twist, they couldn’t care less about it, as they'd already written him off as unimportant.
  • His personal story felt rushed and so badly written, and in turn most of the viewers don’t understand his actions and intentions at all.
    • Only in the manga, Danganronpa Killer Killer, was it revealed that Tengan was indeed brainwashed by the despair video. Considering that this chapter of the manga was released months after the anime ended, for a few months, nobody could really understand why he did what he did.
    • But even if the history is known, it just opens more plot holes. It just doesn’t fit at all for a member of Ultimate Despair to want that hope is spread across the world.
  • He has a complete dumb and illogical plan. He wants Ryota Mitarai to spread his Hope video to brainwash the whole world, so he planned the final killing game so that Ryota came to the conclusion to spread the video himself instead of just asking him to do so, even though Ryota was completely submissive towards Tengan, or taking it by force.
    • The reason that his plan nearly worked was pure luck, as because Ryota was part of the Final Killing Game, he could easily be killed and this whole plan would be ruined.
    • What's worse is that he didn't even intend for Ryota to participate in the killing game. Mitarai simply showed up last-minute after somehow being informed about the meeting of the Future Foundation's branch leaders. Yet, in spite of causing everyone to fall asleep with a sleeping gas, Tengan didn't bother to put Ryota away from the danger. He also didn't bother stealing his phone with the Hope Video while Ryota was asleep (granted, he could be unable to access it anyway depending on the phone's security).
    • Even worse - Tengan gave Ryota an NG Code that prevented the boy's only chance of surviving in such a violent environment - his brainwashing Hope Video (although it's possible that his forbidden action was meant to be literal - Mitarai wasn't allowed to animate rather than show fruits of his work, meaning he could still brainwash others during the game).
    • What's also worse is that it turned out there were no cameras around to broadcast the killing game, meaning if everything went as Tengan initially planned and Mitarai would've never attended the meeting, Ryota wouldn't have even seen it and would've at best been informed about it by survivors. Granted, it could still cause his guilt to overtake him to the point of going with brainwashing the world with the Hope Video, but making him personally watch everyone's death would've been much more effective.
  • Nobody understands why he was picked as the mastermind. Because apart from his fight with Kyosuke Munakata in episode 4 he is treated like a minor side-character. The audience just saw a nice, wise elderly man who runs calmly the meeting of the Future Foundation. Other than his shady-looking design and the potential despair caused by the leader of the Future Foundation turning out to be a Remnant of Despair, it’s nearly impossible to imagine him as the mastermind of this whole Killing Game.
    • In fact, due to his beatdown on Munakata, he was temporarily considered an Ensemble Dark Horse, until the reveal came and his reception flipped on a dime.
    • His whole character got destroyed by the writers due to giving him the main antagonistic role. Some fans speculate that he clearly wasn’t made to be the mastermind and just because the production of Danganronpa 3 was botched, his story was rewritten.
    • Some people even call him the worst mastermind of all media.

Trivia[]

  • Even the creator of the Danganronpa franchise, Kazutaka Kodaka, regretted Tengan's writing.
