“ | I'm not overreacting, I'm a teenager! | „ |
~ Katie Ka-boom infamous catchphrase |
Katie Ka-Boom is a major character in Animaniacs, being the titular main protagonist of one of the show's side segments titled "Katie Ka-Boom". Though she isn’t inherently evil by design, she’s callous and self-absorbed enough to be a serious threat to those around her.
She was voiced by Laura Mooney.
What Makes Her a Scrappy?[]
- Her segment is considered one of the worst, if not the worst segment of the whole show, because of how incredible repetitive and predictable they are, to the point they are hardly distinguishable. All the shorts have less that 3 minutes of runtime, and share almost identical gags and identical lines making very hard to develop anything besides that.
- She's hardly an appealing character, being nothing but a generic bratty teenage daughter, who turns into generic monsters when she gets angry.
- While some of the monsters designs are creative, they are mostly seen as ugly and annoying.
- Some people think that the joke worked for one short, but that turning it into a segment was too much.
- It doesn't help the character's debut short had her accompanied by the more well-liked, but still divisive, Chicken Boo.
- Some have argued that the overall idea of a teenage girl becoming a monster, at the most minimal complication, can come up as a ageist and sexist mean-spirited caricature nowadays, and it doesn't help that the character was inspired by Nicholas Hollander's own teenage step-daughter.
- The original concept was made so little kids would understand a bit better why their big sisters would become more prone to attacks of rage because of their hormones', so a lot of viewers took issue with how unsympathetic the show depiction of these issues was for this.
- She's completely unapologetic towards the destruction she causes, despite commonly destroying the neighborhood and the house because of it, and her main excuse is simply acting like that for being a teenager.
- Another issue with the segment is that just like Buttons from "Buttons & Mindy", her family doesn't do anything truly wrong to deserve getting in the way of Katie's tantrums, as they are shown to be nothing but nice and supportive towards her, and only commit small mistakes like forgetting the name of the guy who called her or giving her a few of obvious tips while driving, and the worst they have done is forbid her from going to a bunch of parties out of worry it could put her in danger out of how she was describing them in "Prom Nights", which is still fairly understandable.
- The things that make her explode are so shallow, that she comes up as more insufferable that funny.
- In "The Broken Date" and "The Blemish", her family didn't even do anything. One was about her date being a few minutes late, and the other was her getting a pimple. Yet she still took out her anger on them.
- "Belly Buttons Blues" deserves particular mention for being the most unjustified of all of her rage attacks, as in this case her family wasn't even forgiving her anything nor she passed any bad situation at all, her mother simply made one comment of her shirt because her belly button was fully visible, and her father made another comment that wasn't even negative, but that still made her snap.
- A comic reveals that Katie is more-or-less capable of containing her anger at school, even when having a rotten day, and its mostly at home when she releases her anger.
- She never gets any punishment for all the trouble she causes.
