Kaname Ohgi is a supporting character in the anime Code Geass. Though one of Zero's supporters for much of the series, he makes a series of poor decisions in the second season, resulting in him leading the Black Knights' betrayal of Zero.

He was voiced by Kirk Thornton in the English dub.

What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]

  • Though he was initially liked by fans due to his loyalty to Zero, he changed for the worse after falling in love with Villetta.
  • While he has some good reasons to doubt Zero, he doesn't confront him directly and is more passive-aggressive about it.
  • He takes an amnesiac Villetta, a Britannian agent, to live with him because he believes she has seen Zero's face and can identify him, showing he was already thinking of betraying Zero at this point.
  • He lets his guard down when Villetta regains her memories during the Black Rebellion, and is shot by her, resulting in the Black Knights being unable to guard Nunnally, who is then kidnapped. This causes Lelouch to abandon the battle, which results in the battle being lost and the Black Knights nearly being executed.
  • He continues to show bad judgment in going AWOL from the Black Knights to meet with Villetta, despite knowing she's threatened to kill him yet again.
  • He leads the Black Knights in betraying Zero to Schneizel, the Black Knights' enemy who had just nuked Tokyo, based on biased testimony from Villetta. He then makes a deal to hand Zero over to Schneizel in exchange for Japan being freed, which would leave the rest of the UFN with nothing. He also doesn't let the UFN know he's going to do this, which means the deal was likely illegal.
  • He tricks Kallen into luring Lelouch into a trap and tries to execute him on the spot without letting him explain himself, and threatens to gun down Kallen as well when she defends Lelouch. This also results in Rolo's death when he overuses his Geass in order to rescue Lelouch.
  • He's also a hypocrite as he claims Zero was using them as pawns, but he uses Kallen as a pawn to lure out Zero and then is willing to kill her. He also accuses Zero of abandoning them during the Black Rebellion despite having gone AWOL for several days to see Villetta.
  • He attempts to cover up his betrayal by lying that Zero was killed in battle. When Kallen protests the betrayal, Ohgi arrogantly says they don't need Zero anymore.
  • His betrayal results in Lelouch losing all hope and resorting to an extremist plan of taking over the entire world and making himself appear to be a hated tyrant, then having Suzaku assassinate him, which likely caused numerous unnecessary casualties.
  • Despite his numerous bad decisions, he survives the series and becomes Prime Minister of Japan, and is married to Villetta, getting an unearned happy ending compared to the other protagonists whose endings are more tragic.
  • In the film Lelouch of the Resurrection, Ohgi offers to commit suicide to make amends to Lelouch for his betrayal. This was an extremely pathetic act, as Ohgi has a wife and a child.

Trivia[]

  • He's a rare case of a Scrappy who was initially very popular due to being very likable at first, only to become one of the most hated characters later.
  • The compilation films, which are set in a different continuity, try to tone him down by having him express more doubt about the betrayal and later resigning as Prime Minister due to his remorse over his mistakes.
