Jonathan is the tritagonist of the 2025 live-action remake of Snow White. He’s a peasant rebel who steals frequently from the kitchen of the Queen to give this to the starving poor. At this point he’s meeting Snow White for the first time. Soon he supports her in her battle against The Evil Queen and became the new husband of Snow White and with Snow White's win the King of the Kingdom.
He was portrayed by Andrew Burnap.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- He got a new backstory and his whole motives are new but to the disappointment of fans of the original this makes this character basically unrecognizable as the prince he was in the original, who was actually well-received (even if he had 2 minutes of screentime)
- He’s seen as a cheap knock-off of Robin Hood, because his whole motivation and the way he met the Princess in the first place are exactly the same.
- He’s seen also as very cheap in comparison to various versions of Robin Hood, as this character was popular due to his charm and cleverness. Jonathan lacks any character traits Robin Hood made popular in the first place.
- Burnap normally has a quite handsome look, but his acting was considered to be flawed. Especially the fact that he looks nearly always the same, avoiding proper emotions, is criticized.
- Despite actually marrying Snow White in the end and arguing with the Evil Queen that he really knows her, Jonathan and Snow White lacking any chemistry with each other, making that statement and the marriage unbelievable. He barely even spoke to her during the movie.
- In terms of political statements this character isn’t subtle at all, supporting leftwing positions towards redistribution policy.
- While this isn’t a problem itself, he clearly supports monarchy, wanting to turn the kingdom back into the time when Snow Whites true parents ruled. On the same time, he wants that there aren’t any differences of the people in the kingdom. His whole political view is a complete paradox which confuses people no matter what political view they have.
- For the whole movie he works as nothing but pure plot armor, which is seen as bad story writing. He was captured by the Evil Queen due to his own stupidity, which is completely out of character, but this was needed so the Evil Queen even knows where her stepdaughter is. He simply broke out of prison when Snow White needed his kiss to wake up out of her eternal sleep, even if it’s not clear yet even shown how he did that.
- To stay at this topic: The kiss scene is seen as ridiculous because there is absolutely no emotion in this scene, and he kisses her extremely hesitantly.
- Apparently, he got more screentime as planned. At least this is what insider talked about. This would explain why many scenes of him look obviously different than before despite still staying in the same place and doesn’t fit in the movie.
- Many people point out that with very small changes they could cut this character completely of the movie and deemed him disposable.
