NOTE: This page is only about Jafar from the live action adaption of Aladdin, since the original animated movie version of him is more popular and memorable among other factors that prevent him from being a scrappy, so only information on the live action version should be put here. |
“ | Another petty insult from that slow-minded fool. He sees a city where I see an empire. Once that lamp sits in my hand, then I shall sit on his throne. | „ |
~ Jafar talking about his goal to usurp the Sultanage and take over Agrabah. |
“ | Steal an apple and you're a thief, steal a kingdom and you're a statesman. Only weak men stop there. You're either the most powerful man in the room, or you're nothing. | „ |
~ Jafar while talking to Aladdin. |
“ | The most powerful in the universe! At last, second to no one! And I thought I had power before! First, I'll lay waste to those fools in Shirabad! | „ |
~ Jafar after using his third wish to become genie. |
Jafar is the main antagonist of the 2019 remake of Aladdin. Jafar is a power-hungry Grand Vizier of Agrabah, who is hellbent on becoming Sultan.
He was portrayed by Marwan Kenzari.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- Unlike Jonathan Freeman, who voiced the original Jafar, he lacks the threatening voice that the original version of Jafar had.
- Many people think Marwan Kenzari was miscast in this version as Jafar, who was not intimidating at all.
- He is so hated that even people who enjoy the film (which is already a mixed bag of reception) usually don't enjoy him.
- He is also just lame in his use of his magic powers, one major example of this is where instead of turning himself into a giant cobra (like in the original version) to kill Aladdin, in this version Jafar uses his magical powers to turn Iago into a monster.
- He also lacks the charisma and intimidation he had in the original film, mostly coming off as petty and non-threatening.
- He also lacks the friendship and relationship with Iago, and isn't seen joking around with him, and instead more of a pet than a partner in crime or a right-hand.
- According to an article by Screen Rant, one of the reasons this Jafar sucks is that Jafar being the weakling that he is in this version of the movie ultimately hurts Aladdin's story as Jafar's manipulation and charisma helps drives Aladdin's story, especially in the original film's first and third acts.
