~ Jacob to Shepard

Jacob Taylor is one of the main protagonists of the video game Mass Effect 2, and a supporting protagonist in its sequel Mass Effect 3. He and Miranda are the two squad members available from the beginning of the game, due to being members of Cerberus.

He is voiced by Adam Lazarre-White.

What makes him a Scrappy?[]

  • He was intended to be Sheperd's best friend and the one person in Cerberus to trust, but the game never gives the player a reason to trust him and is immediately hostile to multiple squadmates once recruited (with one of them being Garrus, who is one of Shepard's most trusted allies and even calls him a Turian slur if the player is Female Shepard).
  • Despite being a main character of Mass Effect 2, he barely contributes to the plot and adds nothing new after the prologue.
  • Him being the only one you can trust is rendered meaningless the moment you recruit Garrus.
  • One of the biggest complaints fans have about him is that he does nothing to stand out from the diverse and unique roster of squadmates in 2.
  • Many fans consider his loyalty mission being the worst and most boring of all the loyalty missions that doesn't give him any character development.
  • Many fans consider him boring because he is the least social of the squadmates, never opens up about himself and actively evades questions about himself, this does not change even after completing his loyalty mission.
  • The point above is not helped by the fact that fans consider him to have one of the weakest voice performances in the franchise, especially bad in his loyalty mission.
  • He is a hypocrite as he insults Thane for being an assassin who joins your squad for free yet has no problem with Zaeed, a violent mercenary who is being paid by Cerberus to work for Shepard against the Collectors.
  • He throughout the second game, gives multiple awful advice and is only called out once for and even then, it is a minor setback. examples being:
    • Going to get the Reaper IFF the moment it becomes available, regardless of the team status.
    • Going into the Suicide Mission as soon as it becomes available, regardless of the team status.
    • Not recruiting Thane.
    • Throwing Legion out of the airlock, despite it being the only Geth that isn't instantly hostile to non-Geth.
    • Offering himself up to enter the ventilation shaft to hack the doors, despite not being qualified for the role and ends up killing him.
  • If you romance him in 2, he returns in 3 to reveal he cheated on you, knocked up and married a woman, which he is never called out for.
  • His hypocrisy doesn't end with Thane, if you call off the romance in 2, he gets mad at you for it yet blames you for him cheating on you while knowing you were incarcerated.
  • If you break up with him for either Garrus or Thane, he gets mad and outright xenophobic towards them, this comes off as jarring because his xenophobia is never established nor explored upon enough so it comes out of nowhere.
  • While other squadmates in 2 are also jerkish and even cruel at points, he is the only one whose jerkish moments are not intentional, as he is supposed to be Miranda Lawson's polar opposite.
  • Some fans accused the character of being a stereotype of a black person, due to having an absentee father and cheating on Commander Shepard (his main romance) with another woman who he accidentally gets pregnant out of marriage.
  • While Kaidan and Vega are also disliked, they still have a decent amount of fans and many fans agree both are still useful in combat with Kaidan's biotics and Vega being the tankiest squadmate in 3, while many agree Jacob is useless in combat as his gameplay is similar to Grunt's but with worse offense and defense.

Trivia[]

  • He is the only Mass Effect scrappy to not be a villain.
