Dr. Jürgen Voller, later known under the cover identity of Professor Schmidt, is the main antagonist of the 2023 action-adventure film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, the fifth and final installment of Lucasfilm's Indiana Jones film series.
He is an ex-Nazi Party official recruited by the NASA to assist in the Apollo program after the conclusion of World War II. He also desires to obtain the Dial of Destiny so he can transform the world into his, aiming to travel back to the Nazi Germany era to overthrow Adolf Hitler. He is the final archenemy of Indiana Jones.
He was portrayed by Mads Mikkelsen.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- Unlike some previous Indiana Jones villains with complex motivations and cool moments, Voller in the contrary, has none and is often criticized as being forgettable and one-dimensional.
- The film explores his Nazi past and his work at NASA, but these elements don't translate into a compelling or unique villainous persona as he's considered to be very generic and underdeveloped.
- His plan to use the dial to assassinate Hitler and alter history is seen as flawed and illogical, diminishing his perceived brilliance, which some viewers criticized.
- Some viewers argue that he rips off another Nazi villain, particularly Major Arnold Ernst Toht from Raiders of the Lost Ark, even sharing some of Toht's uniform and personality traits, although it was to avoid copying him.
- Despite his intelligence and Nazi background, Voller doesn't consistently feel like a genuine threat or particularly show an intimidating presence compared to recent Indiana Jones villains.
- While Mads Mikkelsen's performance is praised, the writing and direction of the character ultimately hindered Voller from becoming a truly iconic villain.
