„
~ Homer insulting the audience's intelligence.
Homer Jay Simpson is the titular main protagonist of the Simpsons: Treehouse of Horror XXII segment "The Diving Bell and the Butterball." He is a version of Homer Simpson who became paralyzed following a spider bite.
The entire plot of the segment only happened because Homer couldn't tell the difference between a decorative spider and a real one. While Homer has always been stupid, this moment was criticized for making him uncharacteristically dumb to further the plot.
He also exclaims "A real spider would get so mad if I did this," which many took as an insult to the audience's intelligence, insinuating they couldn't tell what was going on if Homer didn't state the obvious.
His paralysis did not garner any sympathy from the audience, as it was caused by his own stupidity and plot contrivances, and it only led to bad jokes.
The entire episode had Homer communicating through farting. Audiences absolutely hated this and considered it extremely immature and repetitive.
The scene at the end of the episode where Homer becomes a Spider-Man parody was also criticized, as it was seen as random and pointless.
He also shoots a web from his butt, which was seen as another cheap and unfunny joke.
Like many modern Treehouse of Horror episodes, he's criticized for having nothing to do with Halloween.
Unlike the original Homer, he does not have any comedic moments that could make him more likeable.
His overreliance on fart humor has made "The Diving Bell and the Butterball" the single most hated Treehouse of Horror segment in the entire series.
