Herman is the main protagonist of the Herman and Katnip cartoons made by Famous Studios.
He was voiced by Arnold Stang and Allen Swift, who also voiced Tom's Owner in the Gene Deitch Tom and Jerry shorts.
What Makes Him a Scrappy?[]
- He is a straight-up Gary-Stu who is portrayed as the sure-fire solution to the problems of other mice.
- He never gets any sort of comeuppance for the things he does to Katnip, which makes him a Karma Houdini as he wins at the end of every cartoon they star in. He is meant to come off as the hero while Katnip is the villain, when in fact, he is really nothing more than an irredeemable sadist which actually makes Katnip look sympathetic in comparison.
- He is intended to be the character that the audience must root for, but there is nothing likeable about him whatsoever as he torments Katnip for little to no reason whatsoever.
- He is very manipulative to the point where he comes off as downright mean-spirited. The violence he inflicts on Katnip is not at all funny but is very painful and disturbing to watch, which as crazy as it sounds makes the violence in Tom & Jerry seem quite tame in comparison.
- He never gives Katnip a single solitary iota of mercy whatsoever and seems to enjoy persecuting his rival just for the fun of it.
- He is a blatant rip-off of Jerry from Tom & Jerry, right down to his design. Then again, the whole series is a rip-off of Tom & Jerry.
- Some of the slapstick is beyond unrealistic, even for cartoon physics. In "Surf and Sound", Herman lights a match to set Katnip's stilts on fire, UNDERWATER!
- His Brooklyn accent is really awkward to listen to, and his singing is awful.
- His cartoons are only an example of how Famous Studios usually couldn't think of any original ideas of their own.
Trivia[]
- Herman was voiced by Arnold Stang, who would later go on to voice Top Cat for Hanna-Barbera.
- According to Mike Reiss, one of the head writers for The Simpsons, Itchy and Scratchy were inspired by Herman and Katnip rather than Tom and Jerry.
